!!!!!

So, my MIL was childminding and she was coming for dinner tonight. She came in with Lottie in her arms with the wods 'I have a terrrible confession to make'.

Basically she was in the kitchen, doing stuff and Lottie was being a kid, exploring the house etc. My MIL then realised she'd not heard or seen her for a bit. Shouted to my FIL was she with him - no. So she looked around, then looked again, under tables, behind sofas. It's a big house so it took a while. She then noticed the back door was open. She thougth, maybe she's got into the back garden. Went out and looked around and as she got to the big 7 ft iron gate and walked through she was confronted by a policeman with Lottie in his arms!

She had crawled out, down steps, across huge garden, through big gate, across back drive and 3 garages and was sat in the middle of the road

Some woman found her and was a bit taken aback as you can imagine. She had then picked her up and called the police. The rest you know.

Reports were taken and I'm sure I'll hear more.

So worrying. She's 3.5 and when I carry her to the car in the morning or make her walk while I support her, I stop at the road and say 'stop, look, is there a car coming, no, lets cross', but I think that children, people with Down's syndrome quite often lack that sense of danger.

No harm done, and I'm not upset or angry or anything, but just feel sad really, and concerned that it'll happen again Worrying aye. i'll do what I can to make sure it doesn't happen if I can help it and make sure anyone who looks after her is aware that she can and will escape and sit in roads with no sense of danger if allowed, but..... well, I'll just leave it there, no need to go on.

Oooh bloody hell, girl, what a shock.
Your poor MIL - poor you.
Worrying, yes, but I can't help smiling at the idea of intrepid Lottie making it all that way by herself. So keen to explore, and so innocent of the danger.

That will come, TC, the knoeledge about danger and roads and other important life skills, that will come. Like the mobility that got her into this mess in the first place.

Blimey, what a mix-up of feelings it must all be stirring up. I'm exhausted imagining it.

Omg, hair-standing-on-end time!! I'm so glad all was well eventually and hope everyone's nerves have calmed down.

Children have a never-ending capacity to take us by surprise. Ds1 escaped from playgroup when he was about 3yo and took himself home, over a road. I hadn't gone straight home after dropping him off so he was waiting at the door by the time I got back. I had such a shock but he just said "Where've you been, I've been waiting for you!!' Today that would make the national press but back then (1978) the playgroup staff just said 'Oh, sorry about that.' and that was the end of the matter.

Ds2 got out of the house when he was about 14mths. I was completely unaware of it until a child knocked on the door and said 'Is that your baby crawling up the road?' Omg, yes it was, and not only that, he was sticking v closely to the white line!!!!!

How terrifying Thomcat. So gald this had such a happy ending so quickly - but i imagine it felt like a lifetime fo your poor MIL.

So glad to read that this had a happy ending Thomcat, phew for all concerned.
I have to say some of your other stories are very funny tho girls, I'm just thankful, that so far, neither of the kids seems to have managed to open our front door, even with the keys in it!

Many moons ago, my 3yr old db escaped from the house, and was found riding his tricycle down the middle of the road two MILES away!!!

Thomcat - after reading all the anti-MIL threads recently, it's rather nice to have a "happy-ending-type" tale where you don't want to string yours up!

tc I've only just seen this, what a shock for you (and yr MIL!)
You sound very calm about it but I guess there's a lesson for you and all of us here!
How is lottie btw?
I was watching Born to be Different (sniff sniff) last night and thought of her. Hadnt seen many posts from you lately about her development so wondered how she was doing.
