HELP - Christening present - name a star ??????

Thomcat · 17/07/2010 10:10

My nephew is being baptised in a couple of weeks.

I was thinking of doing the hand and foot print thing from John Lewis but it's £67 and frankly I can't afford it (my last wage cheque bounced and I've still not been paid!) Plus we are going to Menorca for the Baptism.

Anyway, have no idea what to buy.
You get so many of the same sort of gift when you have your child baptised don't you. His Spanish family are very religious so they will dot he whole bible thing as I'm sure some of their English friends'/ family will.

I considered a box thing to keep all the christening cards in after and my sister already bought him a St Christopher.

So is the name a star after him a really awful idea?

Any better suggestions?

I'm not keen on the star tbh but that's personal
Think it's a bit of a rip off
Let's be honest, you're just getting a certificate.

Why not frame a nice poem/prayer for the baby?
Will he be bi=lingual?

champagnesupernova · 17/07/2010 10:28

Or a prayer book from Amazon? Some are q inexpensive indeed.
You could print something like these out yourself and wrap it up?
here
or this

Maybe even better to hand over the ££ that you'd have
spent on the star -to start a saving a/c.

Have a fab time in Menorca

Yeah you're right about it being a rip off actually.

His parents are terribly religious so didn't want to go down the buying a cross to put on your wall sort of thing and I think he'll get a lot of that sort of thing from the Spanish side of the family.

Not easy this.

Fair enough about spanish side having the religion covered.

Is there something small you could buy and add to a collection - give him something every year (saves thinking about what to buy for birthday presents in the future?)
My godmother gave me crystal glasses, piece by piece so when I was 8 I had a full set (think she used to buy 'em in the sale).
Not sure boys are interested in glasses but you get the idea?

Could you do something else like that??

Nice idea, I like that. Just got to think of something he can collect now.

So much easier with girls I have to say.

Thanks for your ideas x

DS got some lovely collectible sterling silver and pottery type things. He got an egg cup, tankard, cutlery set, keyring, bookmark, cufflinks, photo frame, money box, first tooth and curl box, plate, bowl and cup set, brush and comb set, photo album, clock.

He also got some lovely hardback books (don't get those ridiculously sized ones though, they are so impractical so sit down and read with), a savings account opened for him.

Other ideas:

Hallmarked pair of silver cufflinks (would you get DOB or date of christening engraved on?)

Silver or crystal photo frame

Beer tankard

Antique coins

Birth stone

100 year Diary

My sister named a star for DS when he was "welcomed" (we are not religious, we has a Humanist ceremony). That was over a year ago. We still have a certificate in a box, waiting to get a frame. Nice idea, but not very er, tangiable.
