Dishwasher recommendations

We're moving in a couple of weeks and as a present to ourselves we thought we'd get a dishwasher. I know some of you have mentioned their greatness in other threads but would be interested to hear specific recommendations. We would be looking to spend up to £250. Can you get decent ones for this price?

Whatever you do, do not buy a Siemens. They are more expensive than your budget so you will be safe!. We spent £600 on a stainless steel fronted model and it is an utter disaster. In our previous home we had a Bosch which we found to be excellent.

debster, the worst machine of any kind i ever owned was a hoover dishwasher.
we have a dead basic bosch one now and it is fine. might be £300 though, not sure - just has a rinse and 3 programmes. but i think they are cheaper than they used to be.

I can't actually recomend one as ours came as a built in feature when ordered our new kitchen but it is a marvellous thing to have. But what I'd like to know from anyone is their opinon on Dishwasher tablets!

We used to buy the FINISH 2 in 1 (Cleaning & rinse aid built in) tablets but FINISH have now upgraded them to a 3 in 1 (also has Salt included).

I was very wary of using them as I'm new to dishwashers and the thought of not putting in salt as the instructions say worried me it may damage the washer - but the FINISH advert/box says you don't need to add salt as the right amount is in the tablet.........So I bought a small box & gave it a go...They were hopeless!!

Things were not clean and the tablets themselves didn't dissolve properly!! Anyone else had this problem? We've been adding salt to the washer again and things are fine so FINISH 3in1 are deffinetely the problem and we can't get the 2in1 anymore. Should I revert to seperate tablets & rinse aid or is there another brand with built in rinse aid I don't know about?

Sorry to ramble but its so annoying when you are used to something & the product makers change it in someway (HUGGIES NAPPIES CHANGED AS WELL AND ARE NOT AS GOOD - here I go again).

dixie, try scouting around the discount stores like consumers choice, they often have stocks of products discontinued in the big shops (and cheaper too...)
i am currently using sainsburys 3-in-1 tabs which seem to be ok but we don't have to put salt in our d/w anyway (soft water area).
what is the formulation of fairy's tablets? might they be different?
i SO know what you mean about "improvements", they drive me wild!!!

Ours came as part of the fitted kitchen in a new build so no choice in the matter but it's a Candy (and despite the negative publicity that I had heard) 2 years on it has been great (fingers crossed!). We have a slimline one for 2 adults and 1 baby which is perfect - it fills up in a reasonable time so no smelly dishes or loads only 1/2 full. I think that it's a complete Godsend - dh probably has no idea but it revolutionised our marriage and preserved my sanity! We use Finish liquid and no salt (also soft water) and seems fine.

Twink · 02/08/2001 12:05

Dixie, we have very hard water and had same experience with Finish 3in1 and have reverted to putting everything in separately...

We have an 11-year-old Bosch, which we've always been very happy with.

Alibubbles · 02/08/2001 21:25

I have two Bosch's, a slimline and a full size, both basic machines - 3 progs, but they are fantastic. We have two cos when we moved into this house there was only space for a slimline one, I'd just bought a new full size one, couldn't wait for kitchen to be modified so just went and bought anew slimline one. Infact is tis better with glasses than the big one and easier to load.
When we got the house sorted I just kept the slomlne inthe laundry room for the cat dishes, well I did have 5 batty burmese cats! They are both 5 years old and touch would have never gone wrong!

hi i love dishwasher tablets i dont use rince aid and i put seprate salt in i set any thing that is on sale i found there is no differance but i am using sainsbury's at the moment and there own brand is realy good i have a bosch it a slim line if there is only three or four the full load are too big it would take me about three days to fill it i tell you when i go away i so have got out of the habit of the washing up we are arguing over who is to do it we got our one for about 250 it was in the sale but get one life it to short to do the washing up

Mel · 06/08/2001 20:03

Debster, whatever you do don't get a Zanussi! It cleans OK, but seems to run out of salt as soon as you've re-filled it. The worst thing is that the baskets inside fit absolutely no crockery, glassware known to man!!!! It is such a pain to load, and we end up propping stuff up against other stuff! I hate it!!!!!

Newdad · 06/08/2001 21:14

We have a full size Bosch dishwasher and are very pleased with it compared to our previous slim-line Zanussi. Much quieter. Bit more expensive though. Get a full size one if you have the room - easier to load and more accommodating for larger pots and pans. One things for sure - once you've got one, you'll never look back!!

Janh · 06/08/2001 21:48

debster, most of us seem happy with our bosches! the basic one is £250 at tesco electrical on the internet with free delivery AND clubcard points!

(can't give you the address though, i have it bookmarked and it didn't work this time...it was there yesterday though!)

Debster · 07/08/2001 07:53

Thanks everyone for your replies. Yes, it does seem as though Bosch is coming out as a clear winner!

The daft thing is even though we are buying a house I can't actually remember how much room there is in the kitchen so not even sure whether a dishwasher is a viable option. I really hope it is as I am sick and tired of doing the washing up by hand. Isn't it strange that the biggest purchase of your life (a house) is the one we probably spend the least amount of time looking at prior to purchase.

Thought I'd resurrect this old thread. Need a new dishwasher, do you know which one's the Which Report recommends and how long ago the report was? Thanks. R

bundle · 07/01/2003 10:33

we bought a Bosch in the summer sale from John Lewis (same design, capabilities as this year's model, but knob instead of individual buttons for programmes - £100 cheaper!)..dunno about Which? though.

JaneSC · 11/01/2004 17:02

The Dec 02 issue of Which? recommends the whirlpool for full size dishwashers as the 'best buy'
