DS is an only, almost 4. We love him to bits and I enjoy my one day a week off work with him, but ooooh the complete bliss of having a carefully selected little friend over for him to play with.

So far this morning I have been required to dispense a snack and be chased with a spider and other than that am blissfully free to idle away on the internet get on with household chores.

I want to keep his pal forever

My DD (aged 5) is an only and I love playdates too. They make me realise how glad I am that I have just one child

Me too - my dd adores having friends and family over. I did go through a stage where it made me question if my sociable little girl should really have a sibling. However she now has two friends who are sisters (just under 3 years apart) and you suddenly realise that dd has all the fun of play, friendship and love without the competition or arguments! Fantastic!

Can I just add my voice to the I heart playdates chorus too. My dd is nearly nine and would have loved a sibling, I couldn't stomach the idea of pregnancy again. She is a very sociable little girl and has many friends (one or two very special best ones) and I adore it when they come over to play with her or she goes to theirs.

My ds is an only and we have always had a houseful! He is nearly 16 now and all his mates still hang out here and he has never felt lonely. He is often glad when they go too and he can chill! Some of them are like members of the family and it has been great

Oh good glad I'm not the only one. In future years I bet I will be the one trying to extend holiday invites to all DS friends so he has company.

Does anyone else find that (as a parent of one child), you are usually the host for playdates/sleepovers?

As we've fewer 'schedules' to juggle at our house, and don't have to worry about balancing playdates among siblings for 'equity' etc. it does seem we host the majority. Am happy to do it, but dd also enjoys going to somone else's house from time to time.......

i love playdates too - but I have 3 kids. and we're usually the hosts! it's not much extra to have 1 friend back for each, less fighting that way

squeaver · 23/02/2010 20:29

Love them too. Have always got other people's kids here. Don't really care that there's probably more here than at others' houses.

GrimmaTheNome · 23/02/2010 21:01

Yes - love having someone round to keep DD out of my hair. I've got a phone meeting scheduled in the middle of the next one.

Hulababy · 23/02/2010 21:04

I have a 7y only child and really like play dates to, as does my DD. I actively encourage them, both here and at her friends houses. DD is really sociable and benefits greatly from spending time with her friends like this.

StillCrazyAfterAllTheseYears · 23/02/2010 21:10

I heart playdates too. Mind you, I also usually heart the end of playdates.

Acinonyx · 11/03/2010 14:52

We do a lot of playdates here too (one only dd going on 5). I love to see dd playing with friends. It's worth all the mess....
