Tea room the Eighth - sun, sea, sangria, and perhaps a sandy Mellors

DontCallMeBaby · 13/05/2009 19:26

Greetings, welcome to the eighth incarnation of the tearoom.

The tearoom has been, and will be again, a virtual safe haven for anyone up for rather random chat and a comprehensive range of virtual snacks. Nothing in the tearoom will make you fat, or drunk (unless you want it to) or cause an allergic reaction.

The new tearoom location is a beautiful beachside cafe (no need for factor 50, the virtual sun will just lightly tan you, bring out your freckles or simply warm your skin, as you prefer) with a range of garden swings, hammocks, sunloungers, deckchairs etc (as well as a rather incongruous, but well-loved, chaise longue). For those in need of sanctuary, we have managed to fashion a new priesthole out of woven grasses.

Our fellow residents include Mellors the rugged gardener of few-but-well-chosen words, the naked mohawk babies, a coterie of bishops, various domestic pets, and a selection of others. On the human side, all are welcome - while we live in the One Child topic some regulars have more than one, and we are welcome all (except people who put their heads on one side and tell those of us with one child that it's just not fair to have only one child).

Please help yourself to a glass of Champagne and a canape on the way in ...

Done! Gracias!

scottishmummyofone · 28/05/2009 20:09

amber, what charity are you speaking of?

I am on the waiting list for a hearing dog for the deaf (cos I am deaf) and they are taking FOREVER to make a decision on whether to give me one I should hear july/august they say.

amberlight · 28/05/2009 20:26

This one is the governing charity for all of them, so not specifically a single charity. But the work I'm helping them with is for autism support.

Shall be keeping everything crossed for you for the hearing dogs charity - they're good people, so I really hope they can help? My old autism assistance dog Mrs C (before her untimely death) was brilliant at getting me if the phone went, etc (often we're 'deaf' to obvious things because we can only focus on one thing at one time) so I really appreciated the hard work the Hearing Dogs for the Deaf can do.

scottishmummyofone · 28/05/2009 21:46

ah assistance dogs you mean?

What annoys me is so many people just think 'guide dogs' and refuse my deaf friend and her hearing dog access grr

I'm watching last ever ER...I had such a crush on doctor carter

Jacksmama · 28/05/2009 21:49

Oh, I liked him too.

teafortwo · 28/05/2009 23:29

Looooook - your internationally famous laughing wih us ladybits are not alone JM....

Have you always been deaf Scottishmummyofone?

My Great Grandmother saw an awful accident when she was young and the family story is she was so shocked by it that she immediately lost her hearing. It sounds a bit strange to me - but it is a good story.

She grew up to be quite a diva. My Mum always talks of her Grandma's deafness as sort of one of her additional barmy quirks. She was very strict wih the children, always had painted nails, dress jewelry, just so clothes, spent her life a one party or another dancing to vibrations and when she first met my Dad said "I have no idea what that man says. His accent is so strong I really can't understand a word he utters!" Which made everyone fall about laughing (Of course - No-one had thought of it before and she hadn't mentioned it until then - but being a lip reader she was as aware of accents or I suspect perhaps (perhaps you can tell us Scottishmummy)even more so than hearing people.)

My thumbs are 'club thumbs'
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clubbed_thumb

I would love to have thumbs that looked nicer and worked better too. In the past few months they have started to ache a little bit now and then - I think as I get older they will give me a bit of jip. If that happens I am hoping Amber will train up a thumb dog for me!!!!

Jacksmama · 28/05/2009 23:34

LOL tea I saw that thread and nearly joined but it all got a bit raunchy for me...

teafortwo · 28/05/2009 23:35

I am not suggesting having clubbed thumbs throws up as many everyday challenges as being deaf, having recovering ladybits or having aspergers - but seeing as we are talking about bits of us that are a 'bit different' I waned to join in in someway!!!!

Jacksmama · 28/05/2009 23:35
Grin
Jacksmama · 28/05/2009 23:36

I'll have you know that according to my surgeon, my ladybits are now "in the same condition as any other womanwho has given birth".

teafortwo · 28/05/2009 23:38

JM - I couldn't read it all - and the bits ('scuse the pun) I did read were read through fingers covering my face in a 'Watching Dr Who' stylie! But it made me think of you and your horrible troubles so I thought I'd send you a link.

teafortwo · 28/05/2009 23:41

Waaaahoooo!!!!! - Congratulaions!!!!

Jacksmama · 28/05/2009 23:41

I laughed my butt off... nearly...

Pinot Giggly-o anyone??

DontCallMeBaby · 28/05/2009 23:43

Am now slightly intrigued as to why daisy was pondering me, but more intrigued about whether people who lipread can see accents. I do know that accents are mostly in the vowel sounds (well, British regional accents, people with something other than English as a first language can have more variation in consonants as well). So now sitting here saying various words silently in different accents, trying to figure out if I look different when I say them.

Clearly, I mostly look mad.

Lovely DD agreed to stay at a party by herself today, and gave me the best part of two hours 'off'. Yay! Yesterday we went to see a friend and her 5yo (DD's erstwhile best friend) and newborn. My maternal instincts are confirmed missing in action, believed dead. I'd rather take the 5yo off her hands than the baby, and that's saying something, she's a handful!

Dontcallmebaby - I have been meaning to ask you for a while - did you and I first meet in the tearoom or did we 'know' each other before from a wedding thread I was completely addicted to about this time last year.

I remember someone with a nom de plume with baby in on that thread but can't remember if it was you or not...????

thumbwitch · 29/05/2009 00:40

I am late again - have been sorting boxes of paperwork etc.

Am I the only nutter person who keeps all her college/coursework notes? I can't bring myself to throw them out, after all I paid a lot of money to obtain them!

I am starting to get seriously traumatised about this move now - have been one step from tears most of the day and it can only get worse.

daisy - give the Book a go - make it a joint venture with your nanny so that she can fill it in in a meaningful way from what you tell her. That will probably be more useful and less anal than if you do it all!

amber - am quite fascinated as to how you "see" me now!

T42 - ah if only I was a real witch I could fix your thumbs!

JM - good news about your Amazing Recovered Ladybits (internationally renowned). Perhaps you'll be in Mended Ladybits as a success story? Pics of your ladybits blown up to large proportions to show the fine handiwork of your surgeon.

Pinot gigglio sounds like a top plan... Chocolate pavlova anyone? DH makes a stunning pav - this one has strawberries and passion fruit on it - yum!

tubeofcanesten · 29/05/2009 00:51

hiya

thumbwitch · 29/05/2009 01:00

tubeofcanesten · 29/05/2009 01:02

fucker how very dare you I mean it took you long enuff to answer some tearoom Ill try another nite then sleep well witchy

amberlight · 29/05/2009 07:27

Hello tubeofcanesten . Cuppa?

Thumbwitch, since you ask, a small thumb with a witches' hat on it.
Sounds like you need a cuppa as well if you've been close to tears with the move coming up. Remind me of the details (she says, desperately, hoping people will forgive that her brain stores some information less effectively than a sieve stores water, and because she loves hearing about great planned travels).

Scottishmummyofone, yup, assistance dogs is the very one.

scottishmummyofone · 29/05/2009 07:46

yep I have always been deaf

Yes, accents are difficult, I wear hearing aids so I have some hearing. People move their mouths differently depending on where they come from. I find geordie accents hard but londoners are fine.

I have never heard of clb thumbs

teafortwo · 29/05/2009 09:18

Hello tubeofcanesten... Here is a song for you...

www.youtube.com/watch?v=XW4DPIBO5OU

I thought you'd enjoy a coooool rock n roll entrance into the tearoom!!!!

[slightly rebelious emotion]

teafortwo · 29/05/2009 09:40

Sorry - that is quite a cool song... but I meant to send this - which is a far cooler entrance track.

It is dark and toc is wearing sunglasses....

teafortwo · 29/05/2009 09:44

tear - not ear - my keyboard is really blaaaahhhhrrr!!!!

DontCallMeBaby · 29/05/2009 09:47

Tea, no we'd not met prior to the tea room, and I've never been on a wedding thread (I don't think). There is someone around that I occasionally mistake for myself, but I think that's because she starts DontCallMe rather than being a Baby.

Which reminds me of my friend's DD seeing another little girl in her (ubiquitous, Boden) coat and asking 'mummy, is that me?'

Thumb, I kept my uni notes for ages, but they're gone now - might be an essay or two floating about though. I was VERY quick to get rid of my professional qualification notes, and now I could do with them, as I'm examining on a related paper and need to write a sample answer. Oops.

Scottishmummy, that's interesting - and has made me realise that of course you can see accents. There are theories about certain accents stemming from weather conditions, like in very windy places the accent stems from not opening your mouth very far, so of course you'd be able to see the accent.

Of course I speak perfect RP , however I could do with having my head clamped in place when talking to anyone who lipreads ...
