Toddler won't bear weight on leg

Hi

On Saturday at a garden party my 2yr old was lifted by another child. My DD was on a step and the other child wasn't and lifted her, they fell (my DD ontop of the other child) and her foot had got caught between the concrete and the other child

She wouldn't weight bear so I took her to a&e Saturday evening they X rayed her foot and said nothing was broken. She did start to put weight on it and walk with a bad limp in a&e so they were happy it was just bruising.

On Sunday morning she woke up and refused to use it at all, crying and screaming if we touched it so I took her back as there was a bad bruise on her ankle so I thought it was her ankle this time (they didn't x ray it on Saturday as I was holding her leg down to get a picture of her foot)

Again they said no breaks in leg/ankle and she was "putting it on" for attention which really annoyed me

We've got to today and she's just crying non stop saying her foot hurts, wanting cuddles and won't put any weight on it still.

What am I to do? I can't go back to a&e for a third time surely for them to laugh me out again but I'm 99% sure they've missed something on the x rays

It probably does hurt, as would yours with a similar injury. Have you been giving her calpol? Maybe stick a tubigrip on it for a bit of support and it might also have a placebo effect on her.

Yep she's had nurofen and calpol on rotation since Saturday but it doesn't seem to be doing anything we've tried a few "magic plasters" as well and she is still squealing trying to walk on it

My daughter when younger fell in a very similar way and she had a spiral fracture of her tibia. They may need to xray the leg as well.

Ratfinkstinkypink · 27/05/2024 08:42

I'd go back or head for a different A&E, sometimes fractures in toddlers don't show on x-ray.

fernsandlilies · 27/05/2024 08:46

Another one saying back to A&E and ask about spiral fractures/ get opinion from paediatric radiologist

Babyonemorekiss · 27/05/2024 08:50

Definitely go back as sometimes they can miss things in toddlers.

If it's definitely not broken then at least you can get advice. Shes 2 she's clearly not putting it on!

Soft tissue damage can actually be more painful than fractures so it's possible it's just that. Doesn't mean she won't need a boot or bandage though

Thanks all for the advice. Taking her to urgent care centre rather than a&e at different hospital to get a third opinion. She definitely needs some form of support she is hysterical when she tries to but weight on it now whereas the day it happened she was able to

Definitely go back. I really don't think they're capable of faking that much pain at her age.

itsgettingweird · 27/05/2024 09:59

lol at a 2yo faking limping. What planet was that dr on?!

My ds sprained his ankle at 12 months. He didn't walk and limped but showed no signs of broken bones. Did they mention soft tissue injury? They can be as painful.

But if you have no information and are concerned I'd return. If there is a spiral fracture further up there could be further damage by not treating it.

itsgettingweird · 27/05/2024 10:00

Meant to say he wouldn't walk on it and then when he did he limped a bit. He couldn't understand why he couldn't walk on it let alone fake it 🤦‍♀️

Leftfield sugguestion. Has she had a virus recentjy? When DS was 18 months old, he woke up one day unable to weight bear. He had an infection in his knee (reactive arthritis) which the docs thought was from a conjunctivitis infection he'd had a week previously.

Has she got a temperature?

My guess is they will send you to A&E for an x-ray - lets hope its nothing much and DC is good in a few days

They asked me about cough cold etc yesterday but she's not had any recently for well over 1 month and it only started after the trauma of the fall

How did you get on OP?

Outnumbered247 · 29/05/2024 11:15

This happend to us, was a spiral fracture but was picked up straight away on x-ray

How did you get on OP?

Went back and was told again nothing wrong with her leg and apparently toddlers just "know" how to pretend to be injured they eventually put it down to a soft tissue injury and she's just recently started to walk on it again but with a very bad limp

They did tell me there's a common injury called a toddler fracture but can take up to 10days to show on x ray a nurse mentioned we might be told to come back in 10days for another x ray but the doctor didn't seem bothered by these comments and said we didn't need to unless she doesn't get any better by then
