FTM- opinion on MAM bottles and steriliser. Also mattress standards?!

Hi all,

FTM here! I did a lot of research before buying bottles and happily chose the MAM bottles, with the ones I have being anti-colic and also can be sterilised in the microwave.

However, as getting closer to giving birth, I am giving second thoughts to whether I should buy a TT steriliser for ease of use.
Does anyone have any opinions of the MAM
Bottles and sterilising in the microwave vs. An electric steriliser?

Also- I have been trying to seek a bit of advice on Cot mattresses.
My midwife says not to worry as long as the mattress is new and firm but this is somewhat contradicted on the NHS guidance by saying they need to pass the BS EN standards...
yet Lullaby Trust doesn't mention it.
I don't know if I am just getting it wrapped round my neck when I don't need to.

Just a bit of advice and guidance would be appreciated for a very eager yet anxious mum!

Thanks in advance :)

Firstly, congratulations!

My DTs were bf mainly, and whilst we had a microwave one to start with (bought whilst pregnant when I didn’t know my boobs wouldn’t play ball) it was a pain in the arse so I got an electric one shortly after using it a couple of times.

The bottles sound great, but don’t go too mad buying loads, because your baby might not get on with them. I bought tommee tippee before having mine, then had to switch to dr browns for colic and faster flow teats.

From what I remember, as long as it’s a new mattress and firm it’s ok, I don’t know about BS guidelines. DH was majorly paranoid about mattresses so it was one thing I didn’t have to even think about because I handed it to him.

To save you a few gross poonamis, the little baby vests are designed so they can be pulled down the body rather than lifting up and over the head. Learnt that on here when mine were babies, it was a game changer!

@MuchTooTired

Thank you for your prompt reply!

That's why we've bought a set but open to change as required :)

Thanks for your help- I might grab a steriliser cheap if I see one. Then if I don't use it, I know someone giving birth not too long after myself so can always gift it on :)

And thanks again- I am thinking firm, waterproof and flat is the main concerns but wanted to make sure.

And thanks for the extra tip Grin
How exciting!

Have a lovely weekend :)

Hello. We always used the mam ones too. We still use them now that Ds is 2.
We found them great as had issues with the TT ones (we we found they leaked and the baby guzzled the milk too quickly).
We we do have a microwave steriliser though. Found that easier than sterilising them the mam way.
With regards to the mattress, I think most do have the safety standards you mentioned. We got ours from mamas and papas but I think Aldi do good ones too. Smile

You can buy a MAm electric steriliser. I picked up mine 2nd hand for a bargain of £15 x

I've used the Mam bottles at work. I hate the bloody things! If you don't put the ring in the bottom in correctly they leak.

This is basically exactly what I was going to reply!

I think most mattresses sold new would conform to the latest safety standards. For example, I've just had a look on ikea and if you go on one of their cot mattresses, there's a tab called "safety and compliance" and it has the code of the standard it conforms to on there (it's a European EN one but I assume the BS EN ones are probably the same anyway. One to google!). If you can't find the info on a company's website then I'm sure you can just get in touch and they will be able to tell you everything you need to know.

I use/d mam bottles with my first baby and now with my second. Never had any issues. I I don't have steriliser just use microwave with them. Find it very easy. I do have a Milton cold water bucket though for other stuff to be chucked in.

Mattress. Most will confirm to the standard if you check I would imagine

Congratulations

I mainly bf but also used the mam bottles. I just sterilised in the microwave. I didn’t have a separate steriliser but I did use the steriliser bags which are really good and don’t take up an extra space.

neither child spent any time in the cot sleeping. It was a bulky ornament and an occasional safe when I had a bath so the cot was a bit of waste of space.

the best thing I had when they were babies was Amazon prime so if I needed something it arrived next day.

Hello everyone
ive been using MAM bottles since my son has been born.
I recently have started having problems with there 260ml cream coloured bottles.
They have started to spark.
Ive been told that it’s probably because my new microwave needs a clean!!
Ive only had this problem with the cream ones. Ive been reading into this and they have a tendency to set alight in the micro wave.
Hope this helps people.
