Is it too late to travel for a year with 9yo

My dc has just turned 9. Me and dh wfh and are thinking about going on a round the world trip with dc. I will enroll them in on online school and then they would return to current school in September 2023 for year 6.
I have been planning this for years, it was supposed to happen earlier but, covid!
I'm now worried my dd will get lonely. They are very happy being with me and dh, in fact prefer to stick with us than go with friends but do also have healthy relationships with their friends and now it's summer we have been encouraging them to meet up with as many as possible.

Does this sound like a disaster? Taking one dc travelling. We've been a few places long haul already but only on holidays. We've travelled around and dc has always been with us, never really involved with many they said they're happy to go as long as they return for last year of school.

Do it!

Wow it sounds amazing. So much they could learn! I think year 5 is probably your last chance so I would definitely do it

Do it. If not now when ?

Not sure what WFH has to do with it. Are you intending to work whilst doing this travelling? If so there are major tax implications for your employers (and possibly for you) if you’re out of the country for more than 3 months in a year. They may not be agreeable. See also time differences.

Do it if you can afford a year off.

You and DH wfh - so you’d be working while away? and DC would be in online school?

Doesn’t sound like such a great idea if you’d all be spending several hours a day attached to laptops. Better to go for a shorter time - say a couple of months - and be properly “off” and able to focus solely on the travelling IMO.

What does your DC say? Mine are similar age and love to travel but would be very upset to miss out on school, their friends, their usual activities. They’d really enjoy an extended trip over a summer though.

My single parent friend did this alone with her non verbal autistic 10 year old. It did him the world of good. Really opened his horizons. I remember being in total awe of her at the time.

I know this post is 6 months old but if you haven't already, I'd say go for it!

I would have loved something like this. I'm guessing the child will return to the same area and they won't be away forever.

I remember one kid I went to school with moved to Australia for a year before coming back to the same school and he loved it.

I think it depends on the child. My DS(9) loved being away from school and wasn't bothered about friends but DD(12) found it hard. She did have weekly calls with her girlfriends that helped but she couldn't wait to get home to spend time with them. She always felt she was missing out on what was going on back home.
