Hi everyone! A bit of advice needed😩my little girl is 3 months on the 20th. She's already on 8 ounces every 4 hours from the start. But has started crying wanting a bottle around 2.5/3 hours. If I give her it early, she doesn't take all of the bottle. Is she too young for baby rice? She was 5lb 12 at birth, but up to around 12lb now. She is an absolute gorbbbb!😂

Tia xx

Yes she's too young, advice is not to give anything but milk until 6 months. Have you tried her with the hungry baby formula milk?

Vantheman95 · 15/01/2022 11:12

But the baby rices are from 4 months+?
Yep, I've tried hungry baby. She got a really upset stomach and I had to take her off it xx

Don’t give food or hungry baby formula neither are suitable. If she is hungry then give more milk. Are you paced feeding? Offering more milk if she finishes the bottle? If she following her centile line? Babies grow quickly by her second birthday she will be half her adult height so she needs lots of milk.

No, they are not legally allowed to advertise them for any younger but for over 20 years the NHS and the WHO have said babies shouldn’t have any food until they are around 6 months.

Baby rice is polyfilla not baby filler.. Your baby needs more milk that's all.

mynameiscalypso · 15/01/2022 11:18

My DS preferred to feed smaller amounts and more often. Just the way he was. Plus I read that a baby should always leave some milk in the bottle; if they drain the whole thing regularly, it means you should be giving them more. Milk is far more calorie dense and filling than the rubbish that is baby rice plus their digestive system is too immature to handle it. Just feed her when she's hungry.

Vantheman95 · 15/01/2022 11:19

Even though the baby rice would be made with her own formula? I would feed her early yeah, but she only maybe takes a couple of ounces and I notice she is sick more. She is currently on cow and gate anti-reflux milk xx

That’s fine if she only has a few oz. I bet some times you just have a drink or a small snack rather than a full meal.

Vantheman95 · 15/01/2022 11:21

She's already on 8 ounces😩and does drain the bottle. Surely 9 ounces would be too much?

She's more sick when I feed her more tho?

Unless a professional advises younger rules is rules....

Thesearmsofmine · 15/01/2022 11:23

Just give her the milk she needs. Baby rice has less calories than milk, it is just a filler.

RedWingBoots · 15/01/2022 11:33

As PP said don't feed her baby rice she is far too young.

Babies go through growth spurts were they seem just hungry all the time. You just offer them more milk and feed them more frequently.

If your baby is hungry just feed her some milk don't wait 4 hours because it is your arbitrary timetable.

Also when you do eventually ween her at around 6 months start of with fruit and veg that you have pureed/mashed yourself not baby rice. Feeding your baby from jars and packets is expensive, and is giving them extra sugar they don't need.

Vantheman95 · 15/01/2022 11:35

So when I do put her on solids, what do I give her in the morning instead of rice or porridge?

Fruit, scrambled eggs, toast soldiers, cooked oats, mashed avocado, homemade smoothies... just a few ideas

Vantheman95 · 15/01/2022 11:40

Okay, thanks so much 😊

What happens in practice is you start replacing one feed a day with some food.

Normally in the middle of the day because it is easier for you. Hence just giving pureed/mashed fruit and veg. You will then notice it passes straight through her into her nappy.

Then towards a year old all her meals will be food and while some food will still pass straight through not all of it will.

Babies will actually eat weird mixtures e.g. oats on toast, egg and banana as they don't care even if you try to separate the food out. This is because they can feed some stuff themselves and other stuff you have to feed them.

dementedpixie · 15/01/2022 12:24

Feed more often than 4 hourly. 3 hourly is perfectly normal at that age. Your baby isn't even 3 months old never mind 4 months which is the very very youngest age you should think about starting.

No you don't!
You introduce small amounts of food alongside the usual milk feeds. Early weaning is about new tastes and textures not to stuff your baby full of food

cherryonthecakes · 15/01/2022 14:30

Have you looked up when you expect growth spurts? Been a long time since I had a baby but aren't you supposed to feed on demand ?
