Hello, am new to this but would appreciate advice.

Whilst visiting our son's new nursery - he is due to start in Sept - for an induction day,I saw a Rat in the outside children's play area. It ran from the garden to behind the planters in the playground where they grow vegetables.

We live in a city centre, and I am aware that rats are EVERYWHERE but seeing one in a child's playign area of the nursery in which I am going to be sending my son has upset me a bit!

I called the nursery the next day, and they sid that they were aware of the problem, and that they have a contract with the city council, and that they would call them out to investigate.

However, I still find that I am really uncomfortable about this, especially as they have compost bins, and bird feeding tables in this area, I am worried about it.

It is making me feel like I don't want my son to go to this nursery. The nursery has a really good reputation, but I'm just feeling really put off - I am being ridiculous?! Probably. what would you do?

Well I've seen a rat (more than one actually) near my house but still live here...

Well I guess if the city council come and deal with the rat problem, then that will be the only nursery in the city that you know won't have rats (for a while at least anyway).

yes, I've seen them on the main road near to our house, it's just the fact that it was inside the playground at the nursery... I know they're everywhere but ths has just unsettled me. Needed to hear a few voices of reason

Childcare places are ever so good at making sure children wash their hands before snacks etc nowadays too.

My 2 and 4yo dc are having a lovely game with our pet rats on the sofa . Nowt wrong with the odd rat.

suitejudyblue · 29/06/2010 14:28

Very tricky one, if you think about it logically the rat was there whether you saw it or not but having seen it you're bound to worry about it.
The fact that they have told you they knew about the problem is good and I would try not to let it put you off if everything else is good.

It'll be fine, don't worry

I know - it's because I saw it! I could very well send him to a not so good nursery, and they could have the same problem but I would be unaware of it. :S

  • he definitely didn't look like a pet.

It is otherwise a lovely little nursery.
