Nursery - napping

First time mum so please forgive my nuerotic query. My DD has just started nursery (she's 11 mo) she did her first settling in last week and did a longer day yesterday from @ 9-2. She got up at 7am yesterday. During her time at nursery she only napped for 15 minutes! So between 7-2 she had 15 mins sleep. At home she wouldve done @ 1.5 hours. Now I know it's early days but do most babies eventually get used to napping at nursery? Staff tried to put her down twice the environment is darker quiet and in cots so I'm happy with that.

Don't know why but I'm so paranoid about the amount of sleep she gets during the day!

TIA

She will get used to it mcflumpy. It'll just be because of the new surroundings. She's used to napping in a certain place and in a certain way with you. DS was like this when he started nursery and it did not take long before he was napping at the same time as the other children. We ended up actually having to ask them to cut his naps short because he was sleeping too long then wouldn't sleep at night ! It's just a case of her establishing a new routine.

Thanks so much for the reassurance. I just called and they said she did 40 mins today so hoefully that's a step in the right direction.

It's so hard to let go a little...

I know, especially when they have been at home with you for so long. She'll do fantastic at Nursery, my ds loves it now at 2 and a half and has come on leaps and bounds. It gets easier! xxx

My DS has never napped longer than 30 mins at nursery although he normally does 1.5 hours at home. It does mean he's knackered when he gets in though! A lot depends on how they normally sleep - DS sleeps in the dark and quiet at home, whereas at nursery it's noisy and bright, so a lot to expect I guess!

They do get used to it. DS naps well at nursery now, though usually for a little bit less time than he would at home. But he's cheery enough when he comes home, and still naps fine on his at-home days, so all seems to work.

My DD was exactly the same when she first went to nursery - she was too intrigued about being in a new place and in a room with other napping children. She settled down after a few weeks though.

Well she did 1hr 15 today but only 35 mins yesterday hopefully it gets better as the weeks go by. Good to know of other positive experiences. She's in 3 days a week so hopefully she'll catch up on the days she's not there. One thing I have found since she started is she's a nightmare to get to sleep at night on the days she's in, don't know if it's some sort of separation anxiety or overtiredness?

Oh I'm glad to have found this

My little one is also 11 months and is having some half days at nursery before she goes 3 full days on 14th June...

In her nursery, they have a few cots in the room where the kids play which I really don't like!!!! The few hald days she has been in she hasn't slept at all and just crashes when I pick her up. Is it normal that there are cots in the play room (well they are at the wall so at the end but still very much in the room). I find it so bizarre as they won't be able to relax.

chegggersplayspop · 09/06/2010 11:21

Don't worry, they get used to different surroundings. My ds naps on a mat on the floor at nursery and despite being a rubbish sleeper generally, sleeps better at nursery than he would at home (now, after taking some time to settle in of course). Its good for them to get used to a little background noise while they sleep anyway. At least you know the staff will attend to them quickly if they wake up, if they are in the same room no excuse for not hearing them cry.
