chip butties at nursery

I have a friend who has a 3 yr old and 1 yr old at a private day nursery. Last week when she asked the children what they had for lunch they told her chip butties from the chippy. She questioned the nursery manager the next day and it turns out the oven broke down while cooking lunch that day so she and the cook went to the chippy and got chips for the kids and buttered some bread. Friend was a bit shocked at this and so was I really, esp as friend only allows them homecooked meals at home and no greasy food, but what else could they have done without an oven?

I guess if it was definitely just a one-off I wouldn't have kicked up a stink - although I wouldn't have been exactly thrilled either. Don't see what's what's wrong with buying sandwiches, yoghurt and fruit though?

I don't think going to the chippy would be the first option that occured to me if I was running that nursery, tbh...

yes, sandwich or crackers and cheese, fruit, yogurt. no way are chip butties acceptable lunch fodder for anyone (except the very hungover...)

so should she leave it or complain? She is pissed off that they had a stodgy and fattening meal when it would have been easier to make ham sandwiches with side salads for the kids.

as a one of i would leave it, chips aren't going to cause a great problem once as a rareity, esp if they don't have them at home i would probably have questioned why no fish, fishcake, probably glad not sausage and chips. i think that i would have more of a problem with my baby being given cold baked beans (sorry katymac just my opinion) as whats wrong with mashing a banana or avocado, again probably just my opinion as i find the idea of cold baked beans quite revolting.

aren't cold baked beans more prone to bacteria because they're not cooked?

i would not complain, just have gentle word with the manager and say that if this happens again you would prefer that your child had sandwiches and fruit rather than chips as you don't allow these at home. and then if it happens again then i would complain.

I would have been absolutely fine with it in the circumstances described. Me two have chips from the chippies occasionally(like last week on the ferry on the way back from Cowes)

not sure about the bacteria issue with the beans kemalstilleto, but just know that i would be very cross to find out that my weaning child had been fed cold baked beans when so many esay alternatives avaliable such as mashable fruit which i would prefer them to have, but for an older child would probably prefer that they had had a hot meal and not snadwiches would have just liked them to have something else to go with it even if it was just peas.

exactly, we don't have chips very often at home, but we went ot the seaside on saturday and the kids loved eating chips out of a cone with ketchup and using there fingers. as a one off occasional treat it doesn't hurt!

What is wrong with cold baked beans? They are packed full of protein. Only risk from bacteria would be if the tin was opened and left for hours before serving.

as i said just a personal opinion that i think cold baked beans are disgusting and wouldn't feed them to my worst enemy as i hate them, but if you were happy for your child to eat them then thats up to you, but if i was paying anursery for food i would expect a bit more than cold baked beans even in those circumstances as i think that there are better alternatives for a wenaing baby.

Er, I'd have a problem with hot baked beans for children during weaning - high sugar and salt.

Otherwise, no problem with one-off chip butties. Bread and butter with chips - kids NEED carbs. Some baked Beand for added protein, fibre and the stuff in the tomato sauce would have helped, of course. But maybe they were given fruit in addition, anyway.

ROFL @ prefering an avocado to baked beans. Sorry- but what's wrong with an avocado is probably the price unless you wanted a huge hike in nursery fees. They are running a business!

I wouldn't want my child fed chip butties every day, but sorry I think anyone who complais about a one off hasn't got enough to worry about!

i did mention other alternative eg banana and avocados arent that expensive, if it was a one of then the cost really shouldn't be a problem as you can balance it out over the other days.
didn't have a problem with chips for the older children!

why does everything have to always come down to cost? as demonstrated on another thread (started by swiperfox i think) its a load of b that fresh fruit and veg cost more than processed crap a tin of beans is about 35-40p and an avocado is 2 for 80p at my local supermarket therefore same price bunch of bananas about £1 by my reckoning probably no more per child than beans and would have no added salt or sugar!

The problem with serving avocado is that although well bred, well fed, well behaved children will eat it, most won't.

Personally I don't have it in the house because I think it tastes like snot, and I have no objection to baked beans because they taste nice.

Surely some food has got to be all about the taste? We can't just choose foods purely for nutritional content. Some very nutritious foods absolutely ming taste-wise!

As a once off- fine, no problems, nice surprise for the kids. If it happens again- problem!

Oh, and beans are 11p in my local Asda. And oven chips 40p a large bag. I'm not surprised people on a low income give in to them sometimes; I would! (and do occasionally)

i think baked beans taste nice too, warmed up on a jacket potato or piece of toast, but not cold to my 8 month old! sorry just my opinion.
i don't like avocado either but my two ds love it, because i gave it to them when they were weaning, they now eat it in salads or just on its own! personally think it tastes of nothing and has an unpelasant texture but when i was a childminder and fed it to the kids in my care no one ever spat it out much to my surprise!

Not read other posts so not sure if I'm going against the grain here (suspect I am) but it wouldn't bother me - it's only a one off, they probably loved the novelty, it's not going to kill them.

I only hope they put gravy on their chips - YUMMY!

My children are perfectly well bred, fed and behaved but, quite rightly, would turn their nose up at avocado - BLEURGH!

Glad to hear I am not the only one. I am not keen on Avacado either; find it really bland and boring. Used to give DD it when tiny, but she isn't bothered with it now either. She does eat most other stuff though. I do like using in other stuff though.

The chips as a one off wouldn't bother me to much. But then I know that DD's nursery is really good and we are very happy with it, so I would know it wasn't a regular thing.
