Any 3yr olds not going to nursery

I am very torn about if to send my daughter (3yrs in sept) to nursery. I have heard all the reasons why she should go but i'm still not sure. Are there any parents that have made the choice to keep their children at home a little longer?

Hi Mandy,

We sent DS to nursery in the Jan after he turned 3, a school nursery, we really weren't sure though as it all felt a bit too much with the uniform and all, anyway I took him out after a week

And put him in surestart nursery for 2 hours a morning, he loved it and stayed there until he started school full time in reception with no problems.

My DD did one morning a week from 3 and at 3.5 has just moved up to two morings. All play based and no uniforms so good IMO for socialising and playing with different stuff

Its funny how different parents are!
I run and manage my own nursery (my child also attends)
Some parents complain that we are not formal enough and want writing taught! like the state run pre school near us! They have a lot to answer for and seem to get away with everything eg giving worksheets which were not allowed to.
Personally I think a couple of mornings a week is fine then the term before they start school increased up to the 5 sessions. It depends on the child though some like it some dont.

Nurseryvoice do you think 9-1 a couple of days a week is OK for a 3 yo who has been with me up until now? He goes to play groups every day and knows the staff by name etc so understands the concept

FluffyDonkey · 05/05/2010 16:28

Dunno if it helps but I never went to nursery, just started school the September after I turned 4 (so I was 4.4)

Did lots of playgroups and the teacher was convinced I'd been to nursery and didn't believe my mum when she said I hadn't!

Not sure what the reputed disadvantages are but I didn't have problems making friends or being away from my mum. Or concentrating in class etc.

I didnt go to any playgroups whatever either (none around then in my area) I was above my school friends intellectually although I was VERY shy.
I think it still depends on the child, what they want and what you want.

I think 2 mornings would be fine you could always try it and see. It doesnt have to be set in stone, we have quite a few parents who bring them for 2 or 3 sessions then increase to 5 sessions in the last term.
some even stay for lunch a day or so to try and get them used to having lunch away from home.
Good luck

hi my son got early entry to a sn school he was only 2.9 months he loves it ,goes full time sept he wont even be 4 has gdd

Could she go to a school nursery? My ds was 3 in the September and in the following January he started going to school nursery, which was 5 mornings a week, but only 2.5 hours per day. He did this for five terms and had no problems starting full days at school about a week before his fifth birthday.

Because he was collected by 11.30am, he never felt I was abandoning him and I would actually say he really loved nursery. And, frankly, it was a blessed relief for me to have 15 hours a week without him .

DD started going 2 mornings a week after Christmas, then 5 mornings plus one afternoon after Easter.

She enjoyed playgroups already, and totally loves nursery. She often gets up at a weekend and asks if it's 'school' today She was 3 in March.

I'm starting to feel a bit better about it all now. I've filled out the application form today for the school nursery. Its 5 sessions so more than i'd hoped but she may really like it, only time will tell.

Thanks xx
