Staff qualifications can anyone explain?

Hi I've just received some further details od my DD's nursery which she'll start attending this summer. I noticed that the staff are a mix of SVQ level 3 and HNC qualified (with a couple working towards SVQ L3) can anyone advise - is HNC more qualified than SVQ level 3 or is it the other way round?

Thanks

What country are you in? I think it's different in Scotland than England/Wales.

I think an HNC is a higher level qual though - level 5 in England. Whar is it in?

I'm in Scotland. Doesn't say what it's in assume childcare?

HNC is equivalent to the first year of a degree, N/SVQ level 3 is equivalent to two A Levels.

I wasn't aware there was an HNC in childcare, but then I'm in England - maybe it's a Scottish thing.

That's great thanks. I'm not sure what they're qualified in. I'll check it out.

Thanks again

Either way, I shouldn't worry. It seems to me that all such qualifications are mainly about policy, procedures and organisation rather than the essentials of how to care for a child. Years back, before DD and before any experience with children, I was helping a friend write up stuff for her NVQ. I could have passed myself no problem, without demonstrating anything of my skills or lack thereof...

I'm an old stylee NNEB. It's rated as equivalent to NVQ level 3. They both get refered to as a "level 3 qualification" along with a few others. Level 3 is the "qualified" standard in a nursery.

However, quality of staff varies, particularly NVQs. I don't value the NVQ as a qualification very highly.

I totally agree Tiggy, I am NNEB qualified too and had many NVQ students training in my baby room and comparing how much study and effort we had to put in to gain our qualification, to the work required to pass an NVQ was eye opening to say the least.

There is NVQ, CACHE level 3 which is the same as the old NNEB and HNC/HND is level 4 HTH

Im also NNEB qualified and think it was a better way to learn and qualify. not long ago heard someone refer to NVQ as Not Very Qualified.
