No. Nappy Changes at Nursery?

DD (9.5 months) is just having her settling in period this week. Had a chat with the head carer in the baby room and she advised that nappy changes are usually at 12 and about 3pm. Is this normal to only have two mandatory ones? (they said they keep a check for messy nappies and change as required. DD is going to be there from 8am - 4.30, so I will change her when she wakes at 6, I could change her again before leaving the house at 0730, but it still seems a long time to leave her until 12 noon?

... am probably being totally paranoid as its all new to both of us - I guess they do sleep through the night for 12 hours with no change..

RHG.

I don't honestly know if it's normal but I think I would want them to change her sooner than 4 hours after arrival -- don't think that is a lot to ask, seems a bit long to leave her.

But then ... if she usually does a poo in the morning (as my DS does like clockwork) then hopefully they will change her immediately for that reason anyway. I'd seek reassurance on this and say that you're concerned about her being left too long in wet nappies, maybe they will be able to put your mind at rest.

And if she is prone to rashiness at all, I would make a bigger point of it. But yeah, I suppose they do go through the night and that's fine ...

Sorry, not being much help by waffling!

DD's nursery also only does 2 planned nappy changes per day. It seems to work fine.

angelene · 26/01/2010 15:23

When my DD was at nursery she was changed much more frequently than this, probably every 3 hours or so. Certainly more than I did!

FiveGoMadInDorset · 26/01/2010 15:28

DS does 8-3, they have planned nappy changes at 1030, 1230 and 230.

everylittlebeat · 26/01/2010 15:35

I found that DD nearly always had a dirty nappy durni gthe day at some point, which meant 3 changes during the day. Don't worry - if you're otherwise happy with the nursery and the children seemed happy it'll be fine!

The nursery I worked in used to do this until I suggested Key Workers should be responsible for their own children and it got changed to be whenever a change was needed.

You got to learn the toileting routine of your key children and would know they'd have an afternoon poo or whatever.

I know most nurseries do this to cope with numbers, sort of like when you have 10 or more in the same room.

nurseryvoice · 26/01/2010 16:03

no its not normal! ofsted and eyfs states that individual childrens needs should be met. Maybe in the "olden"day this was done but not any more. At my nursery (baby room of 9)nappies are done when they are needed to be done. In fact I stated that my own baby's nappy should be done every 2 hours.

Rachel1410 · 26/01/2010 16:22

Hi, I just checked DS's old nursery log for you (my nursery used to give me a book filled in every day stating every nappy change / bottle etc. so it's easy to check these things!) They used to have 3 mandatory changes a day (10am / 1pm / 4pm) and more if needed in between. nursery hours were from 07.30 to 18.30. If I were you, I'd play it by ear. If your little one is dirty when you collect her, and your not happy, then definitely speak to them about it - or if they get nappy rash etc. otherwise, you're right - they are in them for 12 hours at night without any real trouble.

Northernlurker · 26/01/2010 16:34

Nurseryvoice was that with disposables? If so you are being a bit OTT in insisting on every two hours! How old is baby?

My nursery does two planned changes for the toddlers plus as and when. Dd3 had an excellent line in getting changed then pooing . As and when included if they noticed a nappy was particularly wet of course. Dd3 never had any problems with this regime. They do have to have some sort of routine otherwise all is chaos. If that's not the sort of thing you as a parent can cope with then a nursery isn't for you!

If you're not happy with it just say so. Something along the lines of we're up early so she needs a change at 10.30 or so. Then remind her key worker when you drop her off in the morning. Check its been done in the evening. Nurseries are usually very flexible with babies.

Thanks everyone for the comments. Will just see how things go in the first week and if she appears to bave a sore bottom more often than not I will mention it as she has never really suffered from nappy rash to date.

I said to the girls I usually change her every couple hours to avoid nappy rash. This was fine... however it is a very small baby room as I do not like large baby rooms (it is actually my own nursery)and if another parent requested that then we would accomodate that parents wishes.

thedollshouse · 27/01/2010 16:14

They did say that if the nappies were dirty or wet they would be changed as required. I only changed ds at naptimes unless he was wet or dirty so they are changing them more frequently than I did. Ds never had naapy rash.

TiggyD · 08/02/2010 17:25

I would say that a short while after mealtimes makes sense, as that's when it tends to need doing. 2 per day seems a bit yucky.
