What if you can't get into the nursery of your choice immediately?

Well, that's it really! Is is worth starting them somewhere else and changing when place becomes available or will this affect the child too much? TIA

we need more info
do you need a nursery because you are going back to work?
how old is the child?
could you look into different nurseries with free spaces
have you considered a childminder?
could a grandparent/friend look after the baby until a place becomes available?

sazzerbear · 13/05/2009 16:25

Thanks!
Yes going back to work, ds 2
No family nearby so thought nursery better idea than cm?

how long is the waiting list?
could you put off going to work until there is a space maybe?
it depends how flexible work can be I guess, if you find another nursery with a free space you may as well keep the baby there unless it's really inconvenient

Waiting list about Sept (although could change depending on who leaves/doesn't start etc)
Unfortunately can't put off going back to work that long, have looked at nurseries on paper so far, will check out nurseries and make decision from there I think..Thanks for advice

Pester the nursery, places do become available, espacially in the current job market.

Meanwhile, find an alternative. Remain on the waiting list at the original nursery and defer making a decision until you need to. Your ds may have settled well into your new choice and you may decide it's not worth moving. Will you loose a deposit,

ALternatively find a childminder. There may be people with places available up until September.

My DD moved nurseries after about a month. It wasn't ideal, but I was really unhappy with the first nursery, and a place became available at my preferred nursery.

It didn't affect her at all as far as I can tell but she was only 10 months old.

How long is the waiting list at the nursery you like?

It would be more difficult if your DS had really settled in to another nursery and made friends / got to know the staff and then had to move.
