Nurseries & potty training

AIBU?

I started toilet training my DS (2.9) at the beginning of the Easter hols. We are doing quite well and he is wearing big boy pants.

At his nursery today the manager told me he has to wear pull-ups there. I expressed disappointment as he uses these as nappies. Nursery would only have to take him to the loo once during his short morning stay as I take him when I get there and before he leaves. Is this reasonable?

YANBU.

Send him in, in pants and ask the nursery nurses directly to sit him on the potty as they do with the other ones.

PrettyCandles · 05/05/2009 19:04

Agree with MissPiggy.

Nursery are BU to refuse to support appropriate toilet training.

Littlefish · 05/05/2009 19:10

They are being unreasonable. What reason have they given?

choufleur · 05/05/2009 19:13

that's ridiculous. send him in pants and insist that they take him to the toilet regularly. and use any reward system that you use (if you do)

PortAndLemon · 05/05/2009 19:16

YANBU. He's 2.9 and it's entirely appropriate for him to be toilet training and to be taken to the loo at nursery.

rubyslippers · 05/05/2009 19:16

YANBU

That is awful, I would talk to them again and say how much it is going to confuse your child.

nurseryvoice · 06/05/2009 19:27

agree with others nnurses usually hate pull ups as theyre just like nappies to a child.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 06/05/2009 19:31

Definitely talk to them, my DC's nursery have been very supportive and proactive with potty training DD.

bigchris · 06/05/2009 19:33

christ, it sounds like a shite nursery

Foxy800 · 07/05/2009 22:15

How did you get?

Foxy800 · 07/05/2009 22:16

Sorry meant to say how did you get on?

blackrock · 07/05/2009 22:27

Our nursery only insist on pull ups/nappy for sleep. They went with it once we started training and just asked for lots of clothes. i put three changes per day in. I used pull ups for a few weeks and he went backwards. Have they got a policy on this? It is not best practice.

atworknotworking · 09/05/2009 18:12

The nursery should respect your wishes and routine isn't every child unique? as a cm we go with parents wishes and what the child is used to, we have some that go straight into the pants thing, some that go for pull up's some want lo to use toilet some potty it doesnt matter how inconvinient it is for the carers or if it doesnt fit around their routines, it's their job to support the child. I would definately stick to your guns on this it is such an important stage of a childs development

nct73 · 19/05/2009 21:35

OMG!!!! That's awful. It was actually nursery who asked when we intended to start potty training as felt DD was ready at about 2.3. We did it at easter when she was 2.4. They have been really supportive. First week after starting we took bag with several changes & yes there were several accidents (so many more distractions at nursery) but they were happy to deal with that as is part of the process and by week 2 accidents had fallen dramatically to only the odd bit in pants when not got there quite in time which a few weeks on is still the case. Your nursery are not helping you, your child or even themselves by sending such mixed messages.

ThingOne · 19/05/2009 22:12

YANBU - that's rubbish. How on earth is he going to learn if he spends half the time in nappies? It will be very confusing for him. They should take him more often if he needs it.

juneybean · 22/05/2009 19:31

I'm a NN and I hate pull ups, would prefer to clean up accidents!

Scarfmaker · 22/05/2009 22:25

They are probably short-staffed and can't give one-to-one. What do you think?

If this is the case, talk to the manager.
2.9 is the right time for boys to be potty-trained and it sounds like he is ready.
