Nursery exclusion for broken arm...

Hi. My 4 year old son broke his arm last week, and I have been told by my private nursery that he is not allowed to attend now until the cast comes off. It is written in the nursery policy, so I guess I don't have any comeback... Has anyone else been through this? His placement includes part private (paid) place, and part educational funded place.

this happenned to my ds. he was not allowed in as he had no cast (collar and cuff instead) the nursery said that they couldn't promise that he would be kept from being bumped etc by the other children.

i still had to pay, the same as i would have if he had been off sick with any other illness.

sorry!

I'm surprised at that.

At ds1's private nursery they have had children with their arms in casts.

I guess though if it's written in their policy you can't do a lot about it. Do you get discount for holidays? Could you book it as holiday time to save a bit of money while he's not there?

Good idea about the holidays. I will ask them. We see the dr on Thursday to assess progress, so I thought I might try to arrange to visit nursery and chat with them about it. Not sure what my work will think about it....

sounds a bit harsh to exclude someone because of a broken arm
in fact the EYFS is all about inclusion, and not discriminating against children
they sound a bit behind the times
phone OFSTEd and ask tyhem about the legalities of such a policy

we had a child who broke their leg or ankle and couldn't walk, (he was of walking age) he came back nursery with cast and bum shuffled around the room, he clearly couldn't do all the activities but seemed ok!! We had another child who had an operation on her hips and her bottome half was plastered with a bar between the legs, she came back to nursery for about a week whe was in baby room, but mum found it to much of a hassle and kept her off till the plaster cast came off! another child fell down the stairs, the mum brought him in the next day, he wasn't able to put pressure on his ankle, the doc had said it was a sprain, we sent him home as that seemed to delicate for him to be at nursery
