Fees? Can anyone give me an approximate in London?

I know they must vary wildly - but anyone know what we might be in for putting financially? We would likely need a nursery from 9 months in South London - and I'm wondering if it's worth it for me to go back to work, so wondering what full time and/or part time fees are like.

I'm in South-east London. Monkey DS is in a nursery attached to a primary school and council-run though we still have to pay fees. £38 a day and £19 for half-day. In our area, I saw 4 nurseries - the most expensive was £42 a day and £38 a day was cheapest.

I am in Surrey - £56 per day.

I'm in South London and saw two in our area - one was £57 per day and the other was £65.

I am in South East London, & we currently pay £65 per day.

giantkatestacks · 02/04/2009 22:34

South London - used to pay 55 for ds and will pay 50 for dd (both 2 days a week).

MrsSprat · 02/04/2009 22:35

Between £49 (average/serviceable) and £71 (ridiculously expensive) per day in these SE London parts

mrsbabookaloo · 02/04/2009 22:35

SE London, but quite central several local nurseries are between 40-45 a day, with some posher ones up to 60.

mrsbabookaloo · 02/04/2009 22:37

Oh lastbox, just realised it's you: you're local to me. DD's nursery is a southwark one and good and 42 a day.

Sorry, i don't have a pound sign on my keyboard!!

lastboxoftampons · 03/04/2009 12:58

Thanks everyone!
these are slightly more reasonable. I know someone who goes to the closest one to us and I just looked up the day rate, which is £71!!! Doesn't make ANY sense for me to go back to work at that rate!

Nurseries seem to be in short supply where we are (Herne Hill) - do you all use one in your immediate neighborhood or travel a bit and then continue to work from there?

£40 to £65 in Streatham. Apparently a couple of the pricier ones do discounts the more days you do.

Haven't started with mine yet but was advised to start looking at the ones on my way to the station and only go further if I had to.

But then I'm the sort of person who chooses a house based on length of commute. They're opening new nurseries near us to deal with the baby boom.

hf128219 · 03/04/2009 17:26

My nursery is en route from home to the station - I commute into London.

Try looking for a Surestart Nursery.
They aren't privately owned and tend to be a bit cheaper.

Also, check out Childcare Vouchers.

lovelymama · 10/04/2009 20:47

Beckenham (near Bromley) is £42 per day but a bit better value if DC goes all week then it's £190 per week. We use childcare vouchers to reduce nursery costs by £243 per month so childcare actually 'only' costs us £700 per month. I know this is lots of money but it's better than the £900 it would have been without the vouchers.

And DS has only been there 2 weeks and he's a different baby since he's been there. So much happier and now crawling/cruising...exciting!

HarrietTheSpy · 17/04/2009 10:16

The one we used in Central London is now £1500 per month for full time. I would think in Zone 1 and poss many parts of zone 2 you would be looking at at least £65 per day.
