Does your dc watch tv/dvds at nursery?

and if so, are you happy with it? my dd has recently been telling me about the things she watches at nursery - she is not one hundred per ent reliable but i know they do sometimes watch things. the other day, they were just about to sit down in front of something as it had started to rain as they were getting ready to go outside.
i was quite surprised to be honest but feel a bit hypocritical as she does watch tv at home!
just wondered if this is usual in nurseries.

thye have watched dvds abot brushing teeth and washing hands - dd told me all about "germbusters" and road safety etc but nothing else afaik
i dont think they hav e a telly - they watched it on the computer monitor

MissisBoot · 14/03/2009 20:01

No tv at dd's nursery.

I wouldn't want her to watch tv at nursery - lots of other activities for kiddies to be occupied with if its too wet to go out.

Also I don't pay for them to put her infront of a tv.

Ewe · 14/03/2009 20:01

No, they don't have a TV and I would not be happy with my DD watching TV at nursery, I don't pay a fortune in nursery fees for them to be plonked in front of cbeebies!

MissisBoot · 14/03/2009 20:02

in front

FiveGoMadInDorset · 14/03/2009 20:08

She has seen one DVD on something they were doing a topic on I think but that is it, no TV as such but info DVDs and to be honest it was on but they weren't being forced to watch it.

ScottishMummy · 14/03/2009 20:17

nursery has no tv.so nope

bodiddly · 14/03/2009 20:21

The older kids watch a bit of tv while the younger kids sleep at ds' nursery. I was quite surprised to be honest as they don't actually mention it to parents but it is only for a short while and I can see the logic to it given they have nowhere else to put them and keep them quiet.

olivo · 15/03/2009 18:18

sorry, just got back to this. I thought that not many places would put them in front of a tv. Bodiddly, I can kind of see why in yuor ds' case, although the ones that dont sleep normally do a quiet eactivity - reading, puzzles, stickle bricks etc - but this was all of them. these were not 'educational' ones - dora, peppa pig were mentioned by dd. of course, she was delighted, but i was a bit cross that I pay so much for them to watch tv. plenty of time for that at home

I am pretty much of the same opinion olivo but have just had to learn to go with it as I can't exclude him when the others are all watching. That and this is the only full time nursery in my area!

MrsMattie · 15/03/2009 19:19

No.

At his old nursery they watched films on very special occasions, like Christmas or the last day of term. I didn't mind at all.

olivo · 15/03/2009 19:28

i agree bodiddly, i will go with it for now, unless it seems to get more often. she'd never forgive me if i told them she couldnt when all her friends are!

no
the occasionally doa bit of computer work when they're in the preschool bit though

M1SSUNDERSTOOD · 15/03/2009 21:17

Our daycare nursery watch videos to bridge the lunchtime gap to cover staff lunches etc. At the council nursery without exception I have never seen them watch telly. Do n't think there even is one.

JustCallMeGoat · 15/03/2009 21:19

dd's sometimes watch dvds the kids bring in. it used to piss me off but i got over it.

squirrel42 · 16/03/2009 13:09

I don't think there's anything wrong with a bit of TV to allow older kids to "chillout", say for 20 minutes after lunch while younger children have a nap. If it's Disney films and CBeebies for hours at a time on a regular basis, then yes that's a problem.

GetOrfMoiLand · 16/03/2009 13:17

My dd went to an excellent Kindergarten, it was run by the same two ladies who had always been there. They had never had a day off sick in 18 years apparently! (Only open term time).

There was a huge waiting list as it was so highly regarded. I managed to jump the queue (cheeky0 because I worked for one of the women's husband.

In mid morning all the children would sit in a circle and watch Come Outside, or Pingu, or some other kids programme. It settled them down after a busy morning, and they always talked about the issues the programme had raised afterwards.

I think TV is fine in a structured setting like this.

Iklboo · 16/03/2009 13:24

DS's playschool watch one short DVD/tv programme per week as part of a sort of timetable. It's usually stuff like Kipper ot In The Night Garden. DS is not impressed with ITNG - he declares it 'rubbish for babies'. He's 3.

My DD's nursery has a DVD on at the end of the day as a bit of a calm down time - this is in toddler and pre-school rooms. I think this also frees up the staff a bit to deal with parents arriving to collect their DC and getting their reports run through. I was a bit hacked off at first, but this does make sense to me.

I was more pissed off about the film one Christmas which I think was Shrek, for the toddler room, which I think is a long time to be sat in front of the telly at nursery. I did go in and have a word, when DH went in the next day to pick up DD, they were all reading books!

thank you all for your comments, they have maybe given me a more balanced point of view.

in the dds old nursery they used to watch a dvd from 5pm so that some of the staff could clean for the next day.
In the nursery they are in now they dont have a tv at all.

willowthewispa · 17/03/2009 21:22

Yes - both my current nursery and the last nursery I worked in, we'd often have a video on from 5.30pm - 6pm - the children were often so exhausted by then they didn't want to do much else anyway.
