nursery - snow day, will I get fees refund?

dd's nursery was closed today due to snow

does anyone know whether they should refund me the days fees?

I am not annoyed they were closed but am annoyed that I didnt find out til opening time this morning when i suddenly had to arrange alternative care for the day.

There has been no one there all day and I havent a clue whether they will be open tomorrow, is it unreasonable to expect them to try and tell parents before they drop their kids off?

hmmmm just read that back and it probably is unreasonable, I am a teacher and we have ofsted at the moment, so that is probably clouding my judgement ha ha

No idea if you'll get a refund but good luck. DD only goes to nursery on a Friday and we still have to pay if the nursery is closed for a Bank Holiday, eg, Boxing Day.

gingernutlover · 03/02/2009 17:43

oh yes, dd goes on a monday and we have to pay for bank holidays when they close, thankfully in my job I dont have to work bank holidays.

Not sure if this comes under the same thing though

I would definitely try to get a refund - you paid for a service which you didn't receive. They can get insurance, you can't, so they should bear the risk.

I know that I've never got a refund from our nursery for a snow day and we've had a few since DS started. If you get anything, please update us I'd be very interested

IME when the nursery has been closed for whatever reason (bank hols, ecoli scare) we have been refunded. I would think that my nursery would refund if they were closed due to snow. If I couldn't get to the nursery because of the snow, but they were still open, I would have to pay.

MissisBoot · 04/02/2009 16:40

I was just thinking that about dd's nursery.

Am going to enquire tomorrow.

Would be interested to hear other peoples experiences.

Wow - refunds for bank hols!

This is why the head at our nursery has 3 brand new cars...

Songbird · 04/02/2009 16:45

I know, they're not bad. In fact, they close between Xmas and New Year so we don't pay for that whole week - very welcome at the beginning of Dec that! Still galls me that I have to pay full price when we go on holiday with plenty of warning. Impromptu days off I can understand, but prebooked hols? Half-price seems acceptable to me.

Anyway, off-subject! It sounds like we have it quite good, all things considered.

becstarlitsea · 04/02/2009 17:03

and and very

As you can see, am overwhelmed by emotion (and emoticons!)

Our nursery closes 3 weeks for Xmas and New Year and 3 weeks at Easter and we pay full whack every month!!!

No wonder we're broke!
No wonder he's got such fancy cars!

But DS is so happy there, I couldn't move him, so we are over the proverbial barrel.

surely if they refund you they will have to cut a days' wages out of the staff's pay packets, and it wasn't the staff's fault it snowed

gingernutlover · 04/02/2009 19:21

well, the manager approached (and other parents) this morning, unprompted, and said we are welcome to book a free extra day in leu of yesterday which is a good gesture I think, they have spaces so wont really cost them much and keeps parents happy

i was not expecting anyone to go without their wages because of it. I was asking what to expect, thats all.

I am annoyed that no effort was made to inform parents until after opening time - really unhelpful for someone who drops off their child first thing everyday. But that has nothign to do with refunds, its just rubbish organisation.

it stings a bit though, that if they close for snow and I cant find alternative childcare, I have to pay them, and I also have to have a days unpaid leave from work ( i am a teacher so cannot take it as holiday)

the reason they were closed was because staff from a nearby village could not get in because of the condition of the roads

I drove through said village twice that day - without a problem.
