I'm sure this has been 'done' before, but what would you do / have you ever complained to a nursery?

LO is at a local nursery, and since starting there seems to have nappy rash outbreak after outbreak. Nappies clearly get changed on a regular basis, and the staff always write down whether soiled / wet etc, but we for ever seem to be bringing home a baby with a red bum. They put cream on it, which I suppose is good, but how does it get like that in the first place? I also keep finding poo in creases even if the last poo-ey nappy was several hours before. I mentioned the rash a while ago, and staff said it was probably down to teething, but I don't see any teeth coming, and the rash just keeps appearing.

I realise that it is not possible for staff to watch baby's bums all day, and I do have some sympathy up to a point, but I'm really not happy. Does this warrant a letter to the nursery - I don't want to be a moaning mummy, but it is really tempting!! Anyone had a similar problem?

Hi
how old is your lo?

ds started nursery at 7 months a few years ago and got a nappy rash. Now I know it must have been due to the weaning and teeting but I was very upset and complained to nursery at the time - which upset some of the staff and couldn't look at them in the eyes for a while (until ds moved up room)

DD has started nursery at 9 months as I could afford to be home longer but went through the same nappy rash accident with me when she was 7 months old, and I was very careful to change nappy often, was bum properly, put cream - all to no avail. It was the new foods she disagreed with and the teeting (they swallow their dribble and this can cause nappy rash). I felt so guilt for complaining to ds nursery as suddenly the penny dropped.

I would first of all therefore check that the rash is not due to anything else. If she has started nursery recently her diet has also changed as she's eating different food there.

They definitely should be cleaning up properly and if you're finding poo in creases you should mention it to the manager of the room.

Also, what wipes are they using? It may be that they are using some that your LO is sensitive to - I always used to provide my own wipes. If it got bad then I asked them to just use cotton wool and water until it got better. Obviously sudocrem, but also Bepanthem is good which you can let them have and instruct them to use.

In answer to your question - yes I have complained to my nursery before, and action has been taken.

It sounds as though they are not taking enough care. You wouldn't leave poo on her bum, and they shouldn't either

I think you have to stop feeling sorry for them and stick up for dd!

Flightattendant9 · 02/02/2009 12:55

Sorry, might be ds not dd!

Not having a go at you btw, but it makes me so upset when nurseries don't look after babies properly.

Thanks for the replies. We've been using the nursery for 6 months or so and LO was already well established on solids. I've looked at the menu sheets and can't see a correlation between certain foods and nappies, and most of what they serve sounds like stuff I would do at home. I suppose there could be something that they cook with a lot that I don't use maybe?
When we enrolled I asked that the staff clean up with cotton wool and water, but you could be right about the wipes - if they've somehow got into the habit of using their standard wipes instead, maybe there has been a reaction.
I might write to the nursery and check that no wipes are being used, and also make sure to clean up properly because we've had a few problems. Trying to avoid making mountains out of molehills, but if wait longer and then complain that it has been going on for ages the nursery could rightly reply that I should have told them earlier.

Take a stand - my DD was getting nappy rash and then one day on her report card it showed that she hadnt been changed for almost 5 hours. Got very cross with them and told them wasn't good enough. Seem to be alot more diligent now and no more nappy rash.

sheena1 · 05/02/2009 15:54

my ds came home with nappy rash a few times so i contacted the nursery and discoverd they were wearing there own cheap baby wipes even though i had put his in his bag and also they had used cream on my ds which was in popular use by other bums (sorry) so now they use his cream his nappies and his wipes and so far apart from teething there has been no rash

purepurple · 09/02/2009 11:43

I do think you need to mention it to the nursery but feel that a letter is a bit formal.Just ask to speak to the keyworker or baby supervisor and tell them your concerns. They can't do anything about it until you let them know about the problem!

ihave worked in childcare settings for a few years and nappy rash is very common, partly because wet nappies are not always regularly changed.
dirty nappies are always quickly changed but wet nappies are not.

normally at settings there are set times for changing nappies, this is normally twice or three per day and this is when wet nappies are guaranteed to be changed. but children can and aften are left in wet nappies after these times. depending on what time your child has their nappy changed last and what time they leave to go home, they can be in wet nappies for 3-4 hours before going home.

sending a child home with poo in the creases of the skin is not acceptable and any setting leader/manager who really cares for the children will be horrified.
please, please do mention this to the setting manager, she or he will definetly be able to help your baby recieve the care and dignity they deserve.

Hi Badgeroo, I used to run a baby room and occasionally one of my charges would develop nappy rash. It was my job to work with the parents to try to establish what was causing it and how to prevent it happening again. Sensitivity to particular wipes was usually the cause but I've also know babies to be sensitive to certain nappies too, do you supply nappies or do they? If so are they using the same brand you do at home?

The poo in the creases is not acceptable at all and needs addressing. A quite word with the room leader should be enough, I once went to change one of my charges at routine nappy time, a couple of hours after they'd been changed by my assistant after a poo. (We always checked every nappy at 'nappy time', even children who'd not long been changed, no child should be left in a wet nappy for hours.) I discovered this child had not been cleaned properly after the poo and whilst they weren't sore, this was not good enough. I spoke to my assistant then monitored her nappy changing for a while, problem solved.

I hope you get things sorted Badgeroo.
