Saturday group. Is this 'allowed'?

Hello everyone.

This is my first post on Mumsnet. I'm hoping someone can help me.

I'm thinking of setting up a Saturday morning Spanish 'club' for young children and wanted to know if there is any kind of 'license' that I need in order to be able to do this.

It would be 1 or 2 hours long, for about 6 children, aged 4-7ish, in somewhere like a church hall.

Will I be breaking any laws if I set this up and charge parents to send their children?

Is insurance necessary? (Eg, in case a child hurts himself while he's there and his parents decide to sue me).

Also, an unrelated question, why does everyone here call their child DS or DD??

Darling Son, or Darling Daughter )or not so darling in the case of my DS1 at the moment.

I think you would need insurance - and also get your self CRB checked.

I just wanted to say that I think your idea is great. I would be delighted in spanish classes for children were availible where I live.

If children are being left by their parents you may need to get Ofsted reg too....NO idea about the rules of it all....hopefully someone will be along who knows more about it than me!

get the parents to stay, then no probs as the children are in their care.

Your local Sure Start Partnership should be able to give you more information about setting up an 'Out of School Club' (as they are called.) They should have a worker that has a remit to support clubs. Check your Local Authority Website in how to contact the Sure Start Partnership.

You don't need to be OFSTED registered as the club is activity based (activity means up to 3 sports or academic subjects as would be taught in a school. It would mean that every single dance/music/swimming class would have to be registered so this exemption was put in place.

You need public liability insurance and a CRB check.
