Is lego a suitable toy for a room of 2.6-3yo's?

What are the rules on toys that are intended for a different age group at nursery? What about toys which explicitly say "not suitable for children under 3 years"?

DD3 was at nursery a couple of weeks ago and they had lego out (proper lego - not duplo) which I believe has a "not suitable for children under 3 years tag" on (correct me if I am wrong though. It may even have a recommended age of 4y???

This was in a room full of children between the ages of 2.6 and 3.

What are the rules on this...as I was a bit surprised by the presence of lego in a room with children so young.

it wouldn't bother me. i think at 2.6 they are capable of playing with it without putting it in their mouths, which would be my only concern,

ds1 has had lego for ages and loves it

sorry, don't know about actual rules on such things though!

It didn't really "bother" me as such...as DD3 has 2 older sisters and so lots of lego sized crap around the house.

I was just surprised that they were explicitly supplying a toy which falls into the category of toys not recommended for this age group for safety reasons.

Maybe it was being used to improve fine motor control under strict adult supervision?

My DD is in this age bracket (2.9) and she would be unlikely to play with lego as it takes her too long (and much concentration) to put 2 pieces together. So not withstanding safety considerations I'd be surprised at it being provided as a "general playing toy" for this age group.

I wondered similar - as DS's nursery often give him things not suitable for under 3s - he's not yet 2.

For example, they had him playing with that fake snow stuff the other day (the sort you add water to and it expands). I thought he would love it when i saw it in the shop but didn't buy it because although it says non-toxic it isn't supposed to be suitable for under 3s and it does explicitly "DO NOT EAT".

He has also played with things like egg whisks and although I think "Oh yes I see they are trying to be all exciting..." I also would worry he got his tongue stuck (he's in a baby room for under 2s at the minute).

A difficult one I think...

duplo would be much more suitable - children of that age woudl find the bigger bricks easier to take apart and manage

the warnings on toys are just to cover the manufacturer legally. imo lego is fine for children of this age group, the children where I work would have it out every day all day, actually they do! it is very addictive and keeps them occupied for ages, they learn so much, like sharing and negotiation, they are developing hand-eye coordination and mathematical concepts like size and colour recognition.but we have hardly any lego heads left, have they eaten them all?!

nannyL · 03/01/2009 00:18

i agree with pure purple

no reason why 2,6 year olds couldnt play with lego imo

milou2 · 03/01/2009 00:24

No.

mamadiva · 03/01/2009 00:38

I wouldn't say it's suitable TBH I think at that age children are still very touchy feely and I wouldnt want my DS to eat it which I know he would try and he's 2.5YO.

I used to work in a nursery and it's against the law if I remember rightly so defo not!

purepurple · 06/01/2009 20:27

no it's not against the law clap me in irons now!
