Sending poo home - new H&S reg or something?

I have 2 DS' who both attend the same nursery.

DS2 has only recently started there and wears washable nappies. For some reason they wrap up and send his poos home to us in his dirty nappies. Now they never used to do this when DS1 was in nappies; they always emptied the nappy out before putting it in the bag (even the really minging nappies).

Is there some new H&S regulation I should be aware of, or are they just being lazy?

I think they're being lazy. My dd's come home emptied out. The flushable liners go down the loo. I'd have a word if I were you.

are you using liners?

Washersaurus · 15/10/2008 15:08

We use fleece liners, but always have so can't think that is the problem. It may just be different staff who aren't sure what to do then - I'll mention it later. I don't want to be carrying home bags full of poo

I've heard of other nurseries doing this. It probably is their interpretation of 'elf and safety.

FranSanDisco · 15/10/2008 15:18

The poo should be rinsed out in an appropriate basin. Failing that, it should be flushed down the loo and the liner rinsed under the flushed water. There is no way body waste is returned in a bag along with soiled clothes. I would have a firm word as someone is either confused or trying it on. The soiled clothes should also be double bagged before being handed back to you.

FranSanDisco · 15/10/2008 15:20

Sorry the poos SHOULD ALWAYS be put down the loo but if there is a laudry room there are desingated basins for washing out the residue. Just read my message back and it sounds as though I wanted them to put a large turd down the plug hole - eww

Washersaurus · 15/10/2008 15:26

I can whole heartedly understand why the staff don't want to touch DS2's pooey nappies, as they are usually really foul, but why should I cart it home after it has been sat in his bag all day and then sort it out

I'll have a word with the manager later. Thank you everyone

Hiya,

Never used washables so don't know much about them but if I was looking after a friend/family's kid who does, think I would also do as your nursery and bag and return it to parent to deal with.

Perhaps there is new staff at nursery in my position.

geraldinetheluckygoat · 15/10/2008 21:15

I use washables for both of my ds's. Their poos (especially ds2's) aren't usually the shake of type of poos! They tend to be more hold in the flush of the loo and swish around type, or I wash out the poey ones in a bucket before they go in the machine. I wouldn't expect childcare staff to try to rinse the poo off them. If they are easy to shake off down the loo, or on a flushable liner, then yes, they should, but if theyhave to stand there scrubbing it off, I personally wouldn't expect them to do it, I would do it myself. As a childminder, I wouldn't be happy about being asked to do more than shake it off, if it was a sticky "really foul" one, then yes, it would be double bagged and sent home! And that's from someone who's been doing washables for nearly four years...

I totally agree about not expecting the nursery staff to scrub the poo off the nappies, but I do expect an attempt to remove the bulk of the poo before returning the nappies to me.

Anyway, I spoke to the Deputy Manager yesterday who agreed that however vile the nappy is the staff should try to remove the poo before bagging the nappy up.

Will have to see what happens with today's nappies (betcha he doesn't poo at nursery ever again now)

LOL yeah probably! Sorry, didn't mean to sound arsey, glad you've got it sorted, and agree, big lumps should definitely be removed! Its the crap (so to speak) part of reusables isn't it? My boys' ones have always been pretty grim, and I hate the poo scraping before putting them in the machine!!
Heres hoping for nice compact easy to tip poos for both of us for the forseable future!!
