Confused about qualifying date for 30 funded nursery hours in England HELP!

Hi, I’m getting really confused with the 30 funded hours in England for working parents.

I was of the understanding that you get 30 funded hours the term AFTER your child turns 9 months, and that you had to be back at work within 1 month of the term start to qualify. I have planned around this but after looking again I am not sure if this is correct.

My child turned 9 months in July and therefore qualifies to start the funded 30 hours in September 2026. I am planning to return to work on September 30th and then use some Annual Leave for around a month to return properly in October 2026. My daughter is due to start nursery October 13th 2026.

Will I be able to get the funded hours? I have seen some conflicting information, some saying yes as I will be back September 30th and others saying no I need to be back by August 31st! I am finding it all really confusing and hoping for any help with someone who has navigated this before please.

(Also I have already applied as the Nursery needed the code)

Thanks x

If you’ve got the code then you’ve got the hours.
unless I’m totally missing something lol.

i got my DD code in Nov 24, I went back to work Jan 25 and she started Jan 25. I had no issues

I believe you have to be back at work within a month of the new term starting so as long as you start back by the 30th September you should be ok.

I believe you will be entitled to the hours with these dates however I would consider starting your baby a bit sooner if you are returning in October but they start mid October... it took mine a while to settle that young and I had to go and collect earlier than planned a few times. If I had already started back at work during those few weeks then it would have been a nightmare.

Of course if you have someone else that could step in for you to collect if they are too unsettled then that will be fine.

Thank you! My daughter is starting mid October and I am going back at the end. She is also having a couple of settling in sessions before she officially starts, and my work is flexible if I really need to go and get her early!

So long as you’ve applied and got your eligibility code by end of August you will have your funded hours for the autumn term. The code means your circumstances have been checked and you’ve been found eligible to receive them.

Keep in mind that nursery’s have a head count day mid September so you need to on their books and have filled in your funding form by then. Have some tasters so they can confirm with the council your child is attending. You shouldn’t have too much problem so long as they are attending before October half term. You may not be able to get your funded hours if you start after this. Different areas have slightly different rules so do check with your nursery.
