Could living near plant nurseries affect my housing priority?

Hi I am currently bidding every Thursday on buckshomexhoice. We are family of six, 4 kids under 10 years old in two bedroom house. We have been living in this house for 11 years. The problem with this house is, I recently got a comment from one of my friends when she visited us and made me really think. The house is located so close between two plant nurseries. They do work all the time from producing soil to companies to plants and so on. She commented that this could be an environmental risk for my kids for childhood cancers. That is terrifying. Can you please give me any advise regarding this. We can’t rent elsewhere as we need a big house and we can’t afford it at the moment. We are just waiting to be housed by the council as we already have a priority band b and bidding but it’s taking so long. Could this be a ground to be moved to and A bcos of where the house is located. Thanks a lot. Any insight will help.

@RedTagAlan
Of course I did not claim that there are ‘many sandstorms in the UK.’ Talk about a straw man argument.

I mentioned sandstorms by way of illustrating that various forms of dust can be of concern, as per the WHO link.

The Health and Safety executive also has quite a bit of material on the risks of dust, including wood particles, albeit from an occupational perspective. Commercial compost production involves wood grinding, so would that generate the same kind of dust?

Personally I wouldn’t put much faith in the ‘if it was unsafe it wouldn’t be allowed’ argument. It was not so long ago that drivers were being told that diesel cars were better for the environment but, a lot of particulates later, we learned that wasn’t really the case…A similar situation with log burners.

You have chosen to live in the property for 11 years, enjoying the cheap rent

now because you have made yourself overcrowded you are trying to find ways to get social housing quicker.

you are already a B rating.

and btw a 30 or 50 year old house is not old. many of us live in even older houses Victorian and Edwardian i.e. 100+ years old...

Not a strawman.

I did suggest they might be processing contaminated soil, But I stand by my comment that such a facility would be known about locally.

Lets see what info the OP posts. Maybe they have oil fired burners on their sterilsation machines.

So what you’re actually asking is whether you can be moved to the top of the priority list for rehousing by the council because you read online that living near a plant nursery was an aggravated risk factor for childhood cancers?

I think that’s the gist.

Skybluepinky · 27/05/2026 15:54

No it’s not a priority for moving, but if it worries you rent elsewhere.

momager22 · 27/05/2026 16:12

Hahah as if this is in the ‘Nurseries’ section 🫠

lol you don’t even know my religion and clearly being an atheist didn’t make you nice person so your point is mute.

I think moot is the word you were looking for.

Amberlynnswashcloth · 27/05/2026 17:21

Aren't most plant nurseries 'indoors' ie. under a greenhouse or polly tunnel? I'm not saying that there won't be traces of pesticides blowing in the wind but probably not as high in concentration as you fear. The main risk would be to the workers at the nursery.

Is your current home a council home or a private landlord?

If it’s council get on Homeswapper.

I’d be a bit concerned about going to band A as I believe you must take what they give you, regardless of the area or how far away it is etc.
There was a post back along about someone bringing made to move somewhere but it had no garden, was miles away from the DCs school and in a rough area.
I guess different local authorities have different rules though.

I’m a bit confused as to why you say you can’t use contraception because of your religion - you could get moved to a 3 bed home but then have 4 more other children yet.

So you’re going to always be overcrowded if you keep having kids and so it seems pointless wanting a bigger home when you’re going to end up having more kids anyway.

When I was moved to band A, it was still a bidding system but it did mean that any house that I placed a bid on, I'd be incredibly likely to be #1 and would have to accept it unless I had a VERY good reason not to such as it was advertised incorrectly.

Anyway, there's no way that it will move OP to A for this reason. Not a chance.

I never claimed religion makes you kind it’s you who are randomly attacking a person you know nothing about and accusing religion. I would be ashamed of course if I was you for bringing up religion. It’s stupid. Religion have nothing to do with my original post. I still can’t believe what I saw. It’s sad.

Clearly avoiding posters asking for links as they’re aware how their argument won’t stand up to actual scrutiny.
it just makes you look silly

I already said I don’t have links bcos I haven’t search about it enough. I just asked an innocent question and here you’re all triggered. I won’t see why?!

I had two of my kids by surprise. I never thought I was pregnant so please don’t judge. We always wanted two. This is out of our control. Not everything can be controlled.

Oh piss off out of your control !! Ffs you've had too many kids that you can adequately house and now trying to come up with all sorts of bullshit to get rehoused come the fuck on !

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 27/05/2026 19:24

A neighbour if mine moved to a lovely cottage in rural agricultural North Lancashire near to the Trough of Bowland. Surrounded by farms

She and her husband loved it until the local farmers started.soraying pesticides on their crops.

Husband who has asthma and breathing problems due to a heart and lung condition could hardly breathe.

They moved out and now live on the Fylde Coast.

Just a takeaway about breathing problems and pesticides. I can hardly spray house flies with a can of Raid with gasping !

Having twice as many children as you planned has everything to do with your religion, apparently, and that’s why you posted as all four children seem to be sharing one bedroom?

Surely no more than any other type of farm?

To be honest there will be some sort of environmental risk wherever you live whether that's air pollution from roads, radon gas, electricity pylons etc. Highly unlikely the council will class this as a reason to bump you up the list.

So you can say that being non religious makes a ‘not nice person’ but if someone says the same about being religious then that’s not ok and I should be ashamed. Ok then….
