Since my daughter started nursery last November me and her have never been so ill..

Every few weeks I have had a cough, flu like symptoms ..I'd feel better for a few days and then come down with it again ive had coughs, colds, flu conjuctivitus in both eyes...I'm begginging to worry something is wrong with me..I'm just wandering if this is normal.

She seems to continually have a cough and ive never been in my entire life ....

Help reassure me and if it's normal how long does it last

I really feel for you as I’ve been through it too. We were sick, it felt like every 2 weeks during the first year of nursery with something horrid and I really felt like I was going mad! It’s so disruptive as you’re starting back at work and then constantly having to be off, and it disrupts’s your child’s routine so much as well as it being horrible to see them constantly sick. My child is 2 now and things have been so much better! It will improve :)

also re your partner - my husband didn’t get half as sick either but partly he is a teacher anyway and partly my child just wants me
when they’re sick and at night so naturally it just hit me… my daughter would sneeze into my eyeballs and my husband would be in the spare room!

Totally normal. I’ve never been so perpetually ill as those first few months, particularly over the first winter. Felt like one or other of us was always unwell. Hang in there, it will improve. (Also suggest taking a probiotic for your immune system, like Biomel or similar)

I’m exactly the same, my son had 5 bouts of tonsillitis last year all within 6 months it was horrendous. I’ve had sinusitis 3x the last one was 2wks ago and was given antibiotics because it got worse. Every cough sniffle runny nose I’ve had but dad’s been fine. But I’m with him all the time (apart from nursery) that’s why we get it more it’s a battle but it’ll get easier touch wood

Thwnkyou for everyone's advice..i just feel it's been the same sort of illness with a lingering cough...and now I'm panicking thinking oh God they say tell a docter if you have a cough for more than 3 weeks well 🤦‍♀️bejng so ill every few weeks I feel like I've had a cough forever 🤦‍♀️

Mine gets regular chest infections to the point he's been referred to paediatrics to find out why. Every cold, every cough, every snotty nose goes straight to his chest. He did have RSV/Bronchiolitis at 6 weeks old and he got Bronchiolitis a couple of times after that. He's now on brown and blue inhalers.
My argument is this.... If nurserys cleaned the toys at the absolute minimum once a week, it would help stop the spread. But they don't. So it's a constant merry go round

Same thing was happening to me. Everyone else was picking up the viruses brought home from nursery, but in a normal, manageable way, if that makes sense ... whereas I was being completely knocked out by them. In the end, I went to the GP and she ran a load of blood tests. Everything came back okay except for a really significant vitamin D deficiency, which was affecting my ability to fight off infections. After that was treated I stopped getting ill all the time.

So yes, it's normal to pick up viruses when your little one starts nursery, but if it's overwhelming and frequent, it might be worth checking that there isn't something else going on as well.

We have been the same and I don’t have kids in nursery. I have had pretty much the identical illness four times since late November , as have my children. Sore throat / flu like symptoms, turning into a cough and eventually morphing into a gastro type thing.

Really I'm beginning to think there's somehtjng really wrong with me medically

This is completely normal for the first couple months. Your kid, and you, have to build up your immune systems.

Meadowfinch · 03/04/2026 04:20

Op, if you want to boost your immune system, increase your fruit & veg intake. The NHS recommends eating 30 different fruit & veg a week (or as many as you can manage).
You could take a daily multivitamin as well.

In your family, who does nursery pick ups and drop offs? When your little one is poorly, who does she climb on and cuddle for comfort? Small children love to share their bugs and you may just be in greater contact than your dh.

I do drop offs and her dad does pic ups. Me I'm the one that has her most I only work 2 days a weel so I have her alot of the time. So I guess am close to her but to watch every illness and like have a 2,3 days break in between is becoming relentless

Yes, it was winter. Everyone stuck inside, and toddlers suck at washing their hands, using tissues and everything else adults do to cut down on illness.

NormasArse · 03/04/2026 11:01

Honestly, you wouldn’t believe how many parents send their kids into nursery knowing that they are ill.

Maybe I’m just feeling bitter because I have gastritis at the moment, but I’d cheerfully slap the parents who sent their little diarrhea factory in this week. We sent the child home, and they were back after two days, just to have another poonami.

Chickadee001 · 03/04/2026 13:47

Par for the corse unfortunately, we've all been through it and it doesn't stop when they leave kindergarten either!. Have you started taking any vitamins? Young children like the chewy gummy ones ie Sambucol.

Edenmum2 · 03/04/2026 13:58

My daughter has basically had a cold since Xmas. She might be well for a day or two but then back to snotty and coughing all night. Doc said you can expect 2 viruses a month. Hoping the warmer weather will help

Bryonyberries · 06/04/2026 18:14

This is why nurseries ask for children to stay off when they are unwell. It isn’t just the other children that are impacted but also the adults around them that get poorly. And adults (parents and nursery staff) have to work through it while looking after children and holding down a job! We had to close a room just after Covid lockdown ended as so many staff were off at once.
