Confused about when 30 funded hours start for 9-month-old

My baby is almost 9 months old and she has just been accepted into a nursery. She will turn 9 months on April 4th, so I thought she would get 30 hours funded hours the term after she turned 9 months. I've just been looking and apparently I won't get the funded hours until the term starting 1st of September? I'm so confused by how this can be? I've just seen the nursery fees and honestly shocked by the amount and now stressing about how I will even be able to afford all of it until September.

Is anyone else in a similar situation? honestly seems like such a scam

Unfortunately, yes, the funding won’t kick in until 1 September

Blossoms217 · 25/03/2026 17:55

If baby is born in February when does the funding kick in? Now I'm confused too thanks

Nickyknackered · 25/03/2026 17:56

The term cut off dates are 31st March, 31st August and 31st December so your child misses the Easter term by 4 days.

The term is counted as starting on April 1 (others are September 1 and January 1) so her birthday falls within the spring term and so the hours don’t start until the beginning of the next term.

January. They will turn 9m in November and the next term is the Spring term starting in January.

They’ll turn 9 months in November so funding from January.

Yeah it’s really stupid and tides to school terms. Sept - Dec, Jan - Mar and Apr - Aug. So I always think anyone in april is the most screwed as it’s the longest gap to the next term.

If your baby turns 9 months in sept or dec their funding starts in Jan. Jan or March it starts in April. April or August it starts in Sept

Oh god, this is so unfair! I'm struggling as it is already. Thank you for everyone's replies anyway 😆

1st Sept I’m afraid. Early April babies are expensive….

Yep it’s a pain. My kids are April 3rd and September 7th so miss out by a few days too. This was before the 30 hrs funding at 9 months so you got 15hrs term after two and 30 hours term after 3. At one point I think we were paying £1800 nursery fees. Basically my entire wage. It was like a tax just to keep my job 😩

NerrSnerr · 26/03/2026 07:33

We had an April 6th baby and an August 31st so it evened out for us (although my youngest is 8 so we didn’t get this until they turned 3 and had 6 months of paying two children’s full nursery fees which was £££). April to September will fly by, it is really expensive but you’ll get the funding. Just don’t forget to get your code for the nursery in time.
