Emotional at nursery and drop off since potty training

Hello,

We started potty training DD 10 days ago with relative success, still working on poos but overall it has gone well. She goes to nursery 3 times a week and went in her knickers last week. She has had a few accidents which I know is not unusual and apart from that the staff say it’s going well.

The problem is that on Thursday we had to pick her up early as staff said she was not herself and very emotional. Today at drop off she got very upset when I left. This is very unlike her and she normally loves nursery so was unexpected. She has been fine at home and the only change is the potty training, but as I said we have not noticed any behaviour differences at home due to this.

Any advice or experience greatly appreciated - could this be some separation anxiety caused by the potty training? Or is that not really a thing? L I hate the idea of her being upset at nursery!

She is 2 (24 months) and like I say very unlike her to be upset at nursery or drop off.

thank you in advance for any thoughts

It can often take longer to be potty trained in a childcare setting compared to home as they have multiple children to train rather than the one to one she gets at home. Maybe she is feeling anxious having to hold onto her wee longer at nursery, particularly if you immediately take her to the toilet at home.

It's still early days so I would give it a couple of weeks and see if there is an improvement. Maybe speak to her key worker to see how toileting is done at nursery so you can try and replicate the same situation both at home and in nursery. For example if she has toys on the potty at home/treats and not at nursery this may be upsetting her. My local nursery used a sticker reward chart for both home and nursery so everything was consistent.
