17 month old stopped napping at nursery

My 17 month old has recently stopped her naps at nursery, it has been around 2-3 weeks with no naps during the day.

My question to you guys is that, every drop off and pick up the staff in the nursery are always questioning & making sly digs over the fact she hasn’t been to sleep during the day with them.

Should I say something or am I overreacting?

Does she nap when with you? Eg at the weekends?

Why do you think the nursery staff
comments are “sly” or “digs”? Are there any other issues with the nursery?

goz · 03/03/2026 11:29

Are they making sly digs or are they just letting you know? What do you think they would get out of making at dig at you because you child isn’t tired?

patooties · 03/03/2026 11:59

What do you mean re sly digs? How does she sleep at home? Mine were day nappers (because their sleep at night was fucking terrible).
That’s very young to not nap at all - does she not fall asleep in car or buggy on way home? Mine would have.

Sunshineclouds11 · 03/03/2026 12:06

What are they saying to make it a dig?

Is she shattered when you pick her up?
does she fall asleep on way home?
does she nap at home with you?

my DD has just turned 2 and wouldn't be able to get through without a nap

HelpMeUnpickThis · 03/03/2026 12:10

@patooties @Sunshineclouds11

My DC1 dropped naps at about this age - I don’t think it’s impossible for an 18mo to power through the day. It made for a very early bedtime for us.

I am more interested in the “sly digs” etc - @daiseyduck - why do you think that? Can you come back on that?

Sunshineclouds11 · 03/03/2026 13:39

@HelpMeUnpickThisI don't think it's impossible but definitely unheard of 😂

Everlil · 03/03/2026 13:44

Ours had dropped naps by then. They would be in bed by 7pm and sleep right through until 7.30am.

@Sunshineclouds11 - I am not sure if you are mocking me covered by a laughing emoji.

When you say “unheard of” what is the evidence for that statement?

Sunshineclouds11 · 03/03/2026 15:59

@HelpMeUnpickThisNo I'm not mocking you at all?
seriously? Evidence?
it's not that deep.

user2848502016 · 03/03/2026 17:02

My eldest DD dropped her nap quite young- but she slept through at night so we figured she just didn’t need it. They’re all different

Mysterian · 03/03/2026 17:14

They're probably a bit pissed off at having to get a bed out and make a child who isn't sleepy lay on it for an hour. Just a waste of their time and effort.

Ummm never said it was deep - asking for an explanation for your comment because I didn’t understand it.

Nap regressions are common at this age but honestly, not many children of this age are ready to drop their nap, even if MN babies have all stopped napping by 6 months.

Sooooo perhaps they could do their jobs and entertain the not sleepy child with a quiet activity instead? As it is their job. Why be pissed off with the child and / or their parent?

Coffeeishot · 03/03/2026 17:22

My eldest Dd dropped her nap around 17/18 months, what do you mean "sly digs" are they not just telling you she didn't sleep ?

itsthetea · 03/03/2026 17:24

“Sly digs”

yiu mean you are reading more into their comments that “dd dint sleep again “ ? What exactly ?

many children drop naps then - does your child still nap on other days ? Is your child very tired when they get home? Have you tried having a conversation?

ah yes they don’t nap at home either or oh gosh they are so exhausted can you make sure she has a nap would both be valid responses you could make

“ even if MN babies have all stopped napping by 6 months.”

No one has said this anywhere at all.

No, it was meant to be mildly humorous. But children here do overwhelmingly seem to have dropped the nap very early. Obviously there’s an average and it stands to reason some will be on the lower end of the trajectory, but most children of two and under will have a sleep in the day.

I guess my point is how you conclude what is “early” - that is totally subjective. Children can be so different.

The main reasons for toddler sleep regressions are quoted as being developmental ie learning new skills in language or mobility, or related to teething etc.

My children were super early with teething so by 18mo that was not a regression we experienced

All children are different and “nap schedules” in my view are not always applicable to every single child esp after the 1 year mark.

I would have thought that a professional childcare setting like a nursery should be able to cope with this easily.

Still I wait for @daiseyduck to come
and tell us about the “sly digs” and give more clarity.

That'll be exactly what the staff would want to do but if the parent is insisting they try to get them to sleep then the staff have to waste their time trying.

@daiseyduck are you coming back to explain what other comms you have had with the nursery? Are you insisting on a nap? Why do you think the digs are sly? Etc.
