Should babies have access to outdoor play everyday? DD does a 5 day week and is only taken outdoors twice a week. Been told its difficult on days where there lots of babies?

Yes. I wouldn’t even consider a nursery that doesn’t view outdoor access on a daily basis essential.

Mysterian · 15/01/2026 16:46

Yes. With a few exceptions like high winds and things.

Yes.

my nursery split the room in half to take outside if there's alot of children in that day.

Yes, EYFS requires access to outside play every day.
In practice, it is hard work getting lots of babies outside, lots don't enjoy it etc so often babies don't go out every day.

Yes, babies and young children should have outdoor play everyday. As a previous poster said, many babies hate it this time of year and want to go back in very quickly when it’s cold and wet. Older babies who can run and climb enjoy it most.

How old is the baby? Prewalker? Do they have daily access when the weather is better?

Purlant · 17/01/2026 10:08

I’ve never heard of a nursery that doesn’t have outside play every day. That doesn’t sound right to me.

I've worked in several that don't take younger babies out daily. Obviously they all say they do!

Depends what age you're talking about with 'baby'. I would assume not walking and under 12/15 months?

Blimey that’s bad. I know ours (and friends who live near and go to different ones do) as well all get photo updates during the day (and I can tell by the state of their clothes!).

I’ve used three different nurseries. Two of them had free flow including to the garden for large chunks of the day. One had no outdoor space of their own, but Took them to the park next door every day (definitely, I saw them there a lot).

I’d find no outdoor time a bit of a worry.

NuffSaidSam · 17/01/2026 22:37

Generally yes, but if it's a very small baby and the weather is bad then I don't think it's really a problem if they don't.

VeggieScouse · 18/01/2026 19:29

I don't think our nursery take the babies out in poor weather. By that I mean very cold (like, there is ice or snow) or it's quite wet (the latter being the case A LOT where I live). That doesn't bother me at all though, I wouldn't generally take my under-2s outside in poor weather, especially if they weren't yet walking. My middle didn't walk until they were 21 months either.
