Typical wait time for a nursery school or childminder? (for a 2yo)

Apologies for the naive question. My DH got a job offer in Cambridge and we'd be moving from the US this spring, and I'm trying to understand when we'd be likely to find care for my DD, currently 2.5yo, turning 3 in April. I think we are open to either a nursery school or a childminder who watches multiple children (we'd like her to have some social interaction). Information I've seen is that nursery schools can have very long wait times - 9-12 months? Does that match other people's experiences? Do you think we'd be able to get her in care with a childminder sooner?

Bonus - if anyone has experience or knows whether the 15-hour/week childcare benefit for 3 and 4-year olds requires the ability to access public funds, that would also help us plan. Looking at the UK website, I understand that the working parent benefit (30hrs/week) is limited to those with the right to access public funds, but the 15 hrs/wk benefit for 3 and 4-year olds doesn't specify that, but it's not clear.

Thanks in advance for any advice or guidelines you can offer!

This is something that varies quite a lot from one area to another, but I would expect most good places to have waiting lists. I would start making enquiries now – you may need to put her on waiting lists as soon as possible. If you do have to wait, more spaces tend to come available end of August, when the oldest children leave to start school. You can go on more than one waiting list.

By 'nursery schools', do you mean the nursery attached to a primary school, a private day nursery, or both? Many primary schools will have a nursery attached to them – they generally run 9am-3pm, term time only, and often only take children from 3 years old. Private day nurseries usually run 7.30 or 8am to 6pm almost year round, and take children from when they are babies.

School nurseries, private nurseries, and childminders are all inspected by Ofsted, and you can find the inspection reports online. You have to remember that they are just 1-2 people's snapshot of a day or two at the setting, but they can still be useful. Do also check the dates, though – some will be quite old.

Thanks so much for your response! I'm still learning the right terms. We'd be looking for a private nursery or childminder. We will have a look-see trip coming up in the next handful of weeks, so we might be able to visit some of nurseries. It's a little tricky to start making enquiries now since we haven't yet decided what area we'd be moving to but thank you for the advice! We'll prioritize that and can start looking at Ofsted reports.
