London Feeder Nurseries - what to ask, look out for…

We’re in Central London and about to start looking around nurseries, with a view to applying for 4+ assessment North/Central London schools down the line.

Whilst I’m of the view education is paramount, I am new to parenting/school wars of London. Baby would be attending nursery at about 1.

What questions should I be asking at the tours? Aside from happy kids and no corporal
punishment, what should I be looking out for?!

Thanking you in advance

No corporal punishment? You do know it’s illegal?

Have you had the baby yet?

Hi!
if you’re paying and looking for a private education then you will need to put your baby’s name down for certain schools quite early. Some are when they’re born!
Eg Wetherby prep is when they’re born! And also Highgate school used to be very specific dates of when you put name down in order to even qualify for interviews

If you’re going state - and it makes sense as London schools are fantastic - you’ll notice the catchment areas are now a lot larger as birth rate falling. Easier to get into the best schools!! Unless a school is failing or satisfactory then all Good and Outstanding schools will be amazing. I looked out for how much sport, arts, singing, performance they were doing.. and just how happy the kids seemed when I looked round. I was keen for a diverse school for my DD and also that helped my decision. I went for state primary and private secondary and state sixth form.

good luck @MauriceTheMussel

Oh, @Lilactimes - we’ve got a spreadsheet running for when to apply!

I’ve heard Clowns is THE nursery if you want them into the popular independent North London schools, but equally, if they’re getting assessed at 4, how much influence can a nursery have? That said, I’m well aware of toddlers getting tutors

Ah yes Clowns! In north London by the Heath. My friends kid went there and I think they were really happy! Good luck!
