No, you are not eligible for the funding as a student.

YourWiseSheep · 01/09/2025 20:33

You need to be earning a minimum of £196 in paid employment per week. If you are a student you will not qualify. You also can't setup a business with no realistic expectation to earn anything to try to defraud the system. Infact, HMRC are clamping down on those who are registered as self employed and are demanding additional evidence of income such as business accounts, bank statements etc to prevent this loophole. I have come accros instances where HMRC are opening up proceedings against this

If you're an NHS student, realistically, how are you going to start a business and make profit all whilst studying and doing placements and let’s not forget look after little one too. Or are you just looking for a loophole?

it on placement

butvuoubare Talking about starting a business in order to be eligible for the funding. My question is, how are you going to start a business (along with doing all the accounting and admin), attend your placement, study and care for your little one?

sounds very much like you only intend to start the business to receive funding.

Does it matter?

If it is legal, some people will be doing it, and Pink could as well.

Yes, it matters! The childcare sector is on its needs and people defrauding the system plays a huge part in this. They are starting to do checks as it’s all too easy for people to essentially spew a load of tripe in order to get funded childcare. Let’s also not forget that it’s the taxpayers funding the 30 hours. What’s hilarious is, everyone is up in arms that the NHS is underfunded and the childcare funding also plays a role in this. The more government pay out for childcare the less other sectors, such as NHS, the police and schools, receive.

It matters when HMRC open up a fraudulent case against you yes! This loophole has been getting exploited and HMRC are fully aware and are clamping down on people declaring they will earn x amount and therefore receive funding when in reality they are not earning anything. I work in and around early years funding and have seen a number of fraud cases opened in just the past few weeks.
