Puddle suits

Hi

I’ve got our babies nursery list ready for her to start in a few weeks and one of the items says puddle suits.

There are loads of types but we just need it for nursery and to stay in her bag there. Is a fleece one a good idea or a pac-a-Mac type one?

Has anyone any recommendations for a brand or type which would be good for nursery? We are UK based so winter gets wet and cold a lot!

TIA 😊

Not a fleece one as it will be more difficult to pull on over clothing. I would suggest an unlined one from Vinted. Easy to pull on and off, will fit in the bag as it folds up smaller and cheaper if it gets lost. Ditto wellies. Cheap and cheerful from Vinted and you won't weep buckets if they get lost. I get them from there for my granddaughter so we can go puddle jumping when she visits.

Otter is a premium brand - eg for Forest School. If DD is just in a bog standard nursery, one from Lidl will be fine.

We have both a fleece lined one for winter, and then just a thin one to go over clothes when its raining but warm. Both have their uses. I get them from vinted.
The fleece ones are so nice, especially if it's a nursery that takes them out in all weathers. I remember the nursery staff commenting that my boy was happy playing outside in the freezing cold because of his fleece puddle suit, whereas all the kids were crying to go back inside 😂
Ours are from regatta and next.

And I didn't find the fleece ones difficult to put on over clothes. Get the ones with two zips down the front where the legs fully unzip. Much easier.

Muddy puddles is good but pricy, but also wet Wednesdays (and they always have a good sale on)

I would get a fleece lined one as it replaces a coat in winter. Buy one off Vinted as they are so much cheaper and often still in good condition. If using it at home I always look for ones with 2 zips. I like the Jojo ones although would go for an outdoors brand if they spend a lot of time outdoors on bad weather.

Secondhand is fine, but get one from a brand known to be properly waterproof (which includes Lidl). A lot of the cheaper ones are 'showerproof' not waterproof, and won't stand up to actually playing outside in wet conditions.

We got an unlined one from Next for grandson. It's actually lasted 2 years and hasn't suffered any significant damage. It was about £24

I run a nursery and we prefer the pac a mac type ones. If it's cold, we always layer up with jumpers/coats but they're so much easier to get on and off and easier to keep clean! They dry so quickly.

sciaticafanatica · 28/08/2025 20:04

Regatta sale is our go to

Pac a mac style are best in the sense that you can layer underneath and even on top. Also the thick snow suit type aren't ideal if it's wet but warm- children get too hot but still need to be dry! I will say though, try to get one that's actually waterproof especially if it's for a baby! Many are just shower proof so protect from the rain, but if a child sits down on wet ground it just soaks through.

Used to work in a nursery and found the two piece waterproof trousers and rain jacket worked best, if it was warm we'd use the trousers and jacket combo but if it was cold we'd use could use a thicker winter coat ontop instead and they'd still have dry legs
