Nursery sting! Aibu

Wee one came home from nursery on Tuesday left side of thigh covered in nettle stings, spoke to staff and manager who weren’t aware but would “keep an eye on” same thing happened yesterday but both sides of bum hip area. Spoke to management to basically told he must have an allergy they’ll keep an eye on it. Basically shunned me off.

im I being unreasonable to be angry and want to put a formal complaint in?

Are there nettles in the outdoor space that he has access to? I assume there are but does that mean the children are unsupervised outdoors?

Hermanfromguesswho · 24/07/2025 10:19

Is it nettle stings or hives? If no nettles then it could well be that your child is reacting to something unexpected?

sarah0106 · 24/07/2025 13:14

I think it is nettle stings it went bumpy like stings do; I’ll attach photo, he’s not took a reaction before to anything, but that could obviously change, it when down within 40ish minutes with having no trousers/ nappy on

I would ask the nursery to remove the nettles but that looks like hives to me.

EatMoreChocolate44 · 24/07/2025 13:18

I think you need to clarify if there are nettles in the nursery outdoor play area. The photo looks like hives and an allergic reaction. My eldest came out in hives like these that would disappear and pop up in different areas over a few days. Dr said it was viral. She had been sick a few days previously.

BoredZelda · 24/07/2025 13:29

If it’s below where his nappy/trousers are, it’s highly unlikely it is nettle stings.

hopspot · 24/07/2025 13:32

Looks like hives. My ds suffered from them.

DiscoBob · 24/07/2025 13:36

Nettles wouldn't be that low against his feet. And I doubt they'd let there be nettles in the nursery garden. But double check there isn't.
I would say it's probably an allergic reaction to a bug sting or another plant.

Sundaybananas · 24/07/2025 13:37

Hives. Not much they can do other than keep an eye out for whatever is causing the allergy.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 24/07/2025 13:51

My son used to get hives similar to those if he played in sandpits in shorts...

Ponderingwindow · 24/07/2025 14:03

That looks like hives to me. He is probably reacting to something at nursery. You need to work with them to figure out the cause.

HoppingPavlova · 24/07/2025 14:06

It’s hives, so no idea what you think a complaint about nettles would achieve?

Daisymae55 · 24/07/2025 14:14

That looks like hives rather than nettle stings

My daughter has only reacted with hives once. Took her to the park and they started cutting the grass. After about 5 minutes her arms and legs broke out in hives (she was in t shirt and shorts). So could be anything outside that could be triggering this.

Id monitor for triggers for this. But absolutely check that the outdoor play area has no nettles, which they should be checking for and keeping on top of. If there’s evidence there are nettles then absolutely complain but if not there are many things that could be triggering this reaction

sarah0106 · 24/07/2025 20:56

Sorry I should have said in original post both days they had been on a walk and were playing in long grass

Nettle stings are more like tiny little light coloured bumps. That looks like how DDs legs get when she walks through long grass without taking an anti-histamine, she gets hayfever and eczema.

AuntMarch · 24/07/2025 21:02

I'd say it looks more allergy like too. Probably still a plant/grass of some kind.

Long grass with nettles in? I'm not clear from your posts it you've actually seen any nettles

hoarahloux · 24/07/2025 21:12

Was he naked playing in the long grass/nettles? Nettles don't usually sting through clothes, and the bumps are generally very small. That doesn't look like a nettle sting rash to me.

legoplaybook · 24/07/2025 21:30

Have you changed your washing powder or brand of nappies?

AllHoityToity · 24/07/2025 21:38

are any of the other children stung?

legoplaybook · 24/07/2025 22:05

If he was stung by nettles surely he'd have screamed blue murder, I can't see how the adults wouldn't have noticed.

skkyelark · 24/07/2025 23:31

Another saying hives, and if it's under his nappy, it's pretty certainly not from brushing up against something – the nappy would block it. Even under most trousers, that would be unlikely.

Hives from a viral infection are actually relatively common, so it could be that – has he had a cold or anything? DD2 got horrific hives at one point from what otherwise seemed like mild cold.

Failing that, possibly a more systemic reaction to inhaling pollen? Any other symptoms?

HoppingPavlova · 25/07/2025 00:48

okay, but that doesn’t change the fact that the picture clearly shows they are hives. Your child is likely allergic/sensitive to certain grasses. Many kids are. One of mine is allergic to the majority of grasses and a lot of trees (per an allergy panel), and gets along just fine in life. When they were young, if they used to roll downhill on grass (which they liked doing), more often than not they’d end up with hives. It really hasn’t affected their life in any major way, now if they go for a picnic or whatever, they just take a fold up chair to sit in and if it’s a place they have never been to before they wear long socks under jeans. Places they have been to and found okay, they just wear shorts. That’s life. It’s nothing to write angry letters over.

Bryonyberries · 25/07/2025 07:16

We had two children turn up with little bumps and rashes a couple weeks ago. Spoke to parents as we weren’t sure what might be causing them and both sets of parents had been out walking in the fields the day before. They had noticed them but said they’d faded which is why they didn’t mention it at drop off but then had popped back up while at nursery.
