Nursery settling session

I was hoping for some opinions on my LO settling in session at nursery today. She went for one hour where we observed and next week will go on her own building up to a full day. I’m not sure if I’m being a precious FTM or I should raise any of the below

not washing the children’s hands before snack time

a nursery worker walked in very quickly and knocked a child flying with the door

my baby is gluten free and was given a different snack to everyone else - after snack time she was left unattended and started picking bits of the other children’s snack off the table and eating it. It was only because I intervened that she didn’t eat it and it would have made her very ill

Would you raise any of these? Or am I just being precious?

I'd look for a new nursery. These are health and safety issues. And this is what they're like when a parent is watching, imagine what goes on when no-one is around!

thank you - I know this is where I am but the waiting lists here are so long

i am going to call around Monday

Leave and find a new nursery asap
all of these things are big concerns

a child's food allergy not being handled correctly is v v concerning

pimplebum · 13/06/2025 19:08

Sorry this must be very stressful for you x

ChateauProvence · 13/06/2025 19:11

I am so stressed I have cried all day - bad enough sending her (I know deep down she will be ok at the right nursery) but this has really thrown me

Do you have any other options? Childminder or a nanny share?

ChateauProvence · 13/06/2025 19:20

Unfortunately not - the waiting lists here are months long. I am going to phone around Monday. I am at a bit of a loss - not sure if I should raise it with the nursery or just try and move her asap

I wouldn't let her start at this nursery.

I would also inform Ofsted. And the nursery too if you want.

The door thing is bad, but accidents do happen.

The not washing hands will not go down well with Ofsted, it's a big problem, but maybe they just forgot this once..

Letting a child with allergies/coeliac disease eat the food they are allergic to is gross negligence. That could easily result in the serious injury or death of a child.

legoplaybook · 13/06/2025 19:43

All of those completely unacceptable - I've worked in many nurseries of various quality and those are real basic things that shouldn't happen.

Unless it was the staff members first ever day working in a nursery, then looking through the window in the door before opening it should be second nature.

Hand washing before and after eating should be automatic.

Any child with allergies should have a care plan and be supervised at meal times. They shouldn't have allowed your child to eat there without a care plan in place.

I don't think this nursery is safe and definitely wouldn't leave a child with food allergies there.

As someone who works in a nursery, raise all 3 of those with their manager. People will say look for a different nursery, but I’m sure you know it’s not that simple so I personally would raise these issues and see how she gets on

Anonymous2029 · 13/06/2025 20:11

It’s is totally unacceptable to not supervise very closely when eating until all food is away. My daughter’s nursery one person was allocated to the allergy table and they weren’t allowed to get up from their seat when they wore the red apron until all food was tidied away. They were meticulous about this as they should be and I didn’t even think it was a particularly good nursery!

Washing hands also not good.

Door thing could be accident but it’s extremely careless, hopefully they appropriately consoled the child!

mrsnjw · 13/06/2025 21:06

Wow, the allergy thing is a very big red flag!!! Yuk, not washing hands before eating. Accidents do happen with doors although surly they would look to make sure a child wasn’t behind it first. Big no from me. Imagine what it’s like if a parent wasn’t there how old were the children !

daff0di1 · 13/06/2025 21:06

I would look for something else. I don't know whether they wash hands at mine (I hope so), but the food situation would be a deal breaker for me. I already have this weird fear around baby eating there, although they are good. But this seems very irresponsible. Not all nurseries are like this I hope it doesn't put you off x

Rowen32 · 13/06/2025 21:16

When trying to settle one of mine I saw so many things I shouldn't have. Hands were never washed before eating for one..
I ended up finding somewhere else

Edited

See how she gets on....when she has a food restriction that that if not followed could make her seriously ill?! Are you joking? You sound as clued up on allergy care as the staff at this nursery.
