Toddlers birthday cake at nursery?

It was my DDs second birthday on Monday and she went back to nursery after weekend/bank holiday celebrations on Wednesday. We sent her in with two trays of iced cupcakes from the supermarket which nursery accepted (our nursery still allows cake in), and she went in wearing her birthday dress and badge. They didn’t end up doing her cakes and said ‘sorry we had something on, we’ll do it tomorrow’. She has been in again today and I don’t think they’ve done her cake again. I won’t know for sure until I get to nursery but every other little one has their photos taken with their cakes, and they do a social media post & log the birthday cake in our nursery app as part of their food that day.

It probably sounds super silly but I just feel a bit sad that they haven’t done this yet for my little girl and feel disappointed that she hasn’t had her special photo and post. I’m always really protective that I want her to feel a part of things and included. I’m also conscious that we bought the cupcakes on Tuesday afternoon, and it’ll now be Friday before she (potentially?) gets them.

I’ll be collecting her in an hour. Am I being silly to be let down about this? If they do say they haven’t done the cakes, what should I say?

I would telephone the nursery and say that the cakes will be out of date and could they make time before the weekend.

That's really shit of them. We make little paper crowns for birthday children and always serve up cakes if sent in. We're a small nursery so everyone sings happy birthday to the birthday child. We also keep a stash of treats for the children with intolerances/allergies so they're not left out either. It doesn't take much effort to make a child feel special.

We always do something for the birthday children where I am - on their birthday or the day closest to it (if they don’t attend on the actual day). I would definitely raise it with the room staff and if they haven’t done it today ask for the cakes to be returned.

This would make me sad as well. 2 is definitely old enough that they notice when other children get something like a special birthday cake and song, and would like it for themselves as well. I would agree with the PPs - tell them that the cakes will be out of date soon and ask what's their plan to serve them.
