2 weeks holiday term time Nursery

Just need an advice really.
My DS is in a school attached nursery for 15 hours am only. Due to medical reasons (he had surgery and needed recovery) he was not able to start the nursery in September but in the middle of October. Since then, he had 4 days off (not consecutive) when he was feeling poorly with fever.
Now we would like to book a 2 week holiday out of the country to see the grandparents, wanted it to be during half term week but husband couldn’t, plus the price tickets are very high. The other option is to have him off nursery for 2 weeks +2days before half term. I haven’t spoken with the nursery staff yet as I feel like they were really understanding with my son situation and don’t want to overstep it,it think it might be to many days…I totally understand holidays during term time are not allowed but he is in nursery still…do parents usually do this?
So what would you do in my position?

Nursery isn't compulsory

SJM1988 · 04/04/2025 16:38

Nursery i didnt bat an eyelid taken them out in term time.

School - from reception onwards- we dont unless its an exepcrional reason. You can also get fined now If its over 10 sessions ( 5 days)

Just go. It’s nursery. They won’t care as there’s no regulation here has to be there.

I just tell ours and they are always ‘ have a lovely trip, see you when back’

Thanks! I guess it’s just me being shy to tell them the reason🫣

a) you don't need to tell them any reason

b) why would you be shy to tell them you are visiting family ? Confused

I was just thinking at his poor attendance overall, not sure if there are any rules for that

Nobody will care. There is even a mark on the register that says ‘not required’ which can be used when nursery staff know that your child isn’t coming for a non medical reason. The reason that the nursery will phone you or text to find out when your child is absent when you haven’t told them is for safeguarding. In case you dropped them off and they are hidden in a cupboard or you fell down the stairs and broke your leg and your child is fending for themselves.

I don’t think poor attendance for illness is noted. Half the nursery will be off over winter with various illnesses.
We did pretty good this winter, until March, and Ds has been off at least 1-2 days every week for some illness or another

Just let them know the dates you are away so they can mark it in as holiday on their register, mainly for ratio purposes. There is no compulsory attendance for under 5’s.

sciaticafanatica · 04/04/2025 19:34

You are over thinking this.
he is not in school and is under 5
just go on holiday

Make the most of not being of compulsory school age and take a term time holiday.
