DD came back from nursery smelling of cannabis

DD is 2 years old this month and has just started nursery this Monday. The nursery is on a residential road and the building the nursery is in is essentially a house that is being used as a nursery. Downstairs is for babies and upstairs is for older toddlers. What would be the garden is a playground with soft rubber flooring. It all looks professional and the children seem happy. When we did the tour last month we liked how clean it was and how experienced and knowledgeable all the staff were.

This week is her first week and is going to be for just settling in. Her settling in schedule is that this week she goes in for an hour a day everyday and next week she will do three half days hopefully.

Yesterday when DH and I went to pick DD up we were in the playground there was a strong smell of cannabis. Both DH and I commented on it when we got home. I thought it might be a neighbour given the nursery is right in the middle of a residential road. DH thought it was a particular member of staff as he thought the smell only arrived when she did.

Today when we went to pick DD up, there was no smell in the atmosphere but when we took her home and changed her nappy we realised we could smell it on her clothes and hair (she was wearing a different outfit from the day before). DH thinks if it was the member of staff he suspects, she probably would have carried DD and the smell transferred from her clothes. Whereas I think if the smell was as strong as yesterday and DD was in the playground for a while perhaps the smell went on her clothes. DH disagrees that that was unlikely given it isn't in close enough contact for the smell to be transferred.

I'm not really sure what to do next - I was saying to DH perhaps we see what the next three days are like and if the smell is there.
Should I raise it with the nursery? And how should I go about it? Am I being too precious in wanting to decide against this nursery if the smell is always on her clothes/the playground?

Any advice appreciated x

Raise this with the nursery straight away. They will know who it is, it’s a distinct smell.

Absolutely raise it with nursery! There might be an explanation.....could it be blowing over from a neighbour. You need to understand more about this.

I’d definitely raise it with the nursery.

It feels unlikely that it’s a smell transferring from the air though if strong enough to smell on clothes. In my grandparent’s old house they had a neighbour who frequently smoked it in their garden and I’ve been stood in the garden there while they have and was never able to smell it on my clothes afterwards.

My children's nursery was close to a block of flats and cannabis frequently wanted in to garden and quite strongly. But my children NEVER came home smelling of cannabis and I have a very acute sense of smell.

I'd absolutely raise this with nursery immediately. They probably have an idea who it is anyway.

Thank you everyone.

DH and I have decided not to go ahead with this nursery anymore (we have other options nearby so we're organising tours there too). We will tell them today and also say how DD's hair and clothes smelled of it yesterday.

Good move. I would also inform Ofsted.

Make sure you tell the nursery
