Nursery hygiene - am I right to feel this way?

Genuinely not sure whether I’m overreacting or not but recently I went on a tour around a nursery - one of the best in the area apparently and has a long waiting list (others don’t) just for context.

anyway, during the walk around the manager showing us round said oh we can’t go in X room as they’re doing a nappy change. Fair enough. We then went into the room once the child was dressed but noticed the nursery practitioner was still on the floor with the nappy/wipes so had obviously changed the child on the floor without a changing mat, and exactly where children would usually be playing.

It was towards to end of the day so maybe couldn’t leave due to ratios but it’s really grossed me out thinking children play on the same floor they change nappies on.

Am i overthinking this?

Am i overthinking this?

Yes, I think you are.

It’s not like it was on the table they eat at.

You could ask the manager if this is normal practice. He/she might be pleased you brought it to their attention. My daughter works in a nursery and she says they would never do this.

Springadorable · 23/02/2025 19:14

Are you sure she hadn't moved the mat out of the way? I always changed mine on the floor as they can't fall off the floor!

They may have conducted a risk assessment for a particularly wriggly child and decided that it was safer to change this child on the floor.

InfoSecInTheCity · 23/02/2025 19:40

I think you are over reacting, this is an environment where the floors will be very regularly cleaned, they will have to be because they will be very regularly wee'd on, poo'd on, vomited on, licked, have food thrown/dropped/spat out, mud will be tromped through it, messy play (baked beans, playdough, sand, bubbly water, paint, glue) will be tracked through it.

This

sometimes better to change on the floor if a wriggler and May fall off changing table

NannyR · 23/02/2025 19:46

Maybe it was a quick standing up change with a child in a pull up nappy, no mat needed.

jannier · 23/02/2025 20:01

If the dirty nappy wasn't on the floor too I'd assume she was clearing a spillage or something possibly antibac wipes.

Thanks everyone 😊

I wouldn’t want my child to go there.

Mysterian · 23/02/2025 21:30

I've experienced babies who are so large it would break the safe handling rules to pick them up.

And of course the floor would have been vomited, weeed and pooed on before. Same goes for staff.

littleluncheon · 24/02/2025 08:00

The floor will be absolutely disgusting anyway so I wouldn't worry about it 🤣 it's not like the floor in a home.

Ygfrhj · 24/02/2025 08:06

At ours they have an enclosed changing table/sideboard and the kids can climb up a little ladder onto it. I can't imagine them ever changing a nappy on the floor - I would find this weird. They also keep the floor very clean, no outdoor shoes in the room ever and they eat in a separate area.

richardosmanstrousers · 24/02/2025 08:08

Have you never changed your child on the living room floor?

Somuchgoo · 24/02/2025 09:57

Floor is fine, but they should be using either a mat or disposable pads.

hoarahloux · 24/02/2025 21:36

We have a changing table but often change tall or wriggly children, or those with additional needs who aren't safe on the table, on the floor. We use a changing mat though.

As you didn't see the changing process, or the child, I wouldn't simply assume that the child was just changed on the bare floor. You could ask, though. It's clearly concerning for you so a simple question to the manager would maybe put your mind at ease.

margegunderson · 24/02/2025 22:49

They won't have sprayed shit on the floor. I don't see the problem.

Rainingalldayonmyhead · 24/02/2025 23:13

Wait until all the kids accidentally pee, poo, vomit, snot etc on the floor and your kid crawls on the same floor every day. Yeah it will be cleaned but you get the point.

Seriously OP this is beyond a non issue.
