Nappy changing question

Ds (17 months) has just had his first full day at nursery. When I picked him up and was given his sheet with food, sleep, etc. it gave only 2 nappy changes. He was dropped off at just after 7.30am and picked up at 5.30pm. Judging by the state of his bottom (very red and spotty), he appears to have been left for a while before changing .

Am I being unrealistic or does this seem a bit off? I mentioned it to one of the staff and she seemed a bit surprised that it was an issue. He's in cloth nappies, which they said wouldn't be a problem as they'd dealt with them before. I'd packed 6 nappies, so no shortage.

Is it me?

I would definately say something. 2 changes just isn't enough.

chankins · 06/05/2008 20:14

DEfinitely not enough especially as he was so sore. I would make an issue of it too !

EdieMcredie · 07/05/2008 11:55

Oh my god, my DD would be changed 5/6 times in this space!!

bb99 · 07/05/2008 16:23

DS is 12 mo and in cloth at ft nursery.

Usually there from about 7.30am to 5.30 too.

He's usually changed everytime he's dirty - between 2-3 times a day and then when he gets a bit too wet, so minimum number he's been changed is 3 times, on a day when he did no poos IYSWIM (TMI, sorry) and the most he's been changed is 5 times (lots of poo that day )

He's never come home with a sore bum except when he was teething - and he just seems to get sore when he's teething even if he's changed every 5 minutes!

Ask and see what they say - how's the rest of the nursery eg how do you feel about it?

Pennypops · 07/05/2008 16:34

No way - 2 changes are not enough. Hate tp say it but are the nursery scared of cloth nappies? Mine looked at me like I was an alien when I asked if they could use them.

RubySlippers · 07/05/2008 16:36

at least 3 - 4 nappy changes as a minimum and then any others as and when necessary

would certainly raise with the nursery

bb99 · 07/05/2008 17:24

DS is in wool covers, so the pee tends to evaporate off through the wool and they don't tend to get soaked unless he pees loads. Am a lazy mum and look for all shortcuts possible

Scarfmaker · 07/05/2008 21:08

3-4 times a day seems normal - especially if poos - but 2 could be possible if only wet - one around 11.30 and another around 3.30? Also they may have missed one out - I'm a childminder and both my charges have cloth nappies - I usually have to change them more often as they do get quite wet and clammy.

5-6 times seems excessive - my day would be taken over by nappy changing!

2point4kids · 07/05/2008 21:11

2 changes sounds ok to me, thats about every 4 hours or so
thats how often i change ds1 - of course i change him more if he poos
he is in disposables though, so maybe thats the dfference?

preggersplayspop · 07/05/2008 21:22

My nursery normally does 4 changes a day (or at least checks at least 4 times a day as some of them are marked down on his sheet as dry). I would raise it with them if he is getting sore.

Nina2 · 08/05/2008 20:45

Thanks for all the replies. I raised it with the nursery and said that I would be changing him about 3-4 times in that time at home and they've said they'll make sure that he's changed more often.

Pennypops, I think that you might be right. I wonder if they wait until the 'cloth-qualified' person is free. He's also had a leak and needed his trousers changed, which has never happened with a daytime nappy at home, so I think his keyworker is still finding her feet with them.

Apart from that, he's fine and seems to be enjoying it there. He comes home looking a bit of an urchin, but that self-feeding for you!
