Child sent home from nursery not ill

I got the dreaded phone call to pick my child up from nursery with suspected hand foot and mouth. They told me they’d noticed spots on his mouth and hands, which I hadn’t noticed that morning. I was skeptical but had to pick him up. Because of this I’ve had to take 2 days off work to look after my little one. He still isn’t showing any signs of illness and I have only seen one little red dot on his cheek.
I'm really frustrated to have had to take time off work and essentially lose money because of this. Is there any way to get compensated by the nursery because of their mistake?
he hadn’t been in nursery for a week so I don’t even know how they thought he’d caught hand foot and mouth as that’s the only place he is around other children.
We get funded childcare and only have to pay for consumables, but I’ve basically lost £130 in paid time off for this! And we’re really struggling for money these days. I tend to use up all of my holiday time for when my kids are sick or on school holidays, so I’m really frustrated to have had to take time off for no reason.

Why didn't you send him back the next day of he wasn't ill?

Pomsy · 23/01/2025 12:24

It's frustrating but they can't risk all of the other children becoming ill with it too.

Killerqueenie · 23/01/2025 12:32

Unless he was unwell, he shouldn't have been sent home. NHS online says there's no need for children to stay home with HFM unless they are unwell.

LeopardsANeutral · 23/01/2025 12:40

I don't think they need to be off nursery with HFM. I'd have sent him back the next day.

YoureLucky · 23/01/2025 12:52

They're not even supposed to be off with HFM, did he have a temperature?

You won't be compensated but I'd be explaining the situation to them. Why did you take two days off work?

FrannyScraps · 23/01/2025 13:00

Just because the NHS site says they can attend doesn't mean settings has to let them.

I'm a cm and I don't. It stops your child getting ill in the first place because they aren't playing with sick children. Plus I don't want it, it's really nasty in adults.

Why did he have 2 days off? They won’t compensate, but I appreciate it’s annoying

🙄

When my dd was at nursery she caught hand foot and mouth and they didn’t send her home as they said she was fine to attend as long as she didn’t have a temperature.

I wasn’t sure how long it would take to flare up if it was HFM, they told me to keep him off for 48 hours and I just trusted them 🤷‍♀️ I figured they must see it all the time and know better

He goes to nursery 2 days a week, they sent him home on the first day and told me I had to keep him off for 48 hours

He didn’t have a temperature and was perfectly happy and playing normally. That’s why I was skeptical, added the fact I didn’t notice any spots at all on his body except for the one on his cheek.
I had to take 2 days off because they told me to keep him off nursery for 48 hours (the 2 days in the week that he attends nursery) so I had to take it off work to look after him
