DD sleep at nursery

My 16mo sleeps at nursery for about 1 hour a day and is absolutely ruined when she gets home.
She usually sleeps about 2 hours for her nap when she's home on the weekend.
She wakes about 3 times in the night atm she just will not sleep.

I'm wondering if it's just over stimulation at nursery and if she had a better nap in the day she might sleep better at night

But I have absolutely no control over nursery naps. It makes me want to reconsider her childcare 😩 has anyone had anything similar?

I was a sahm with my eldest and I remember his daytime naps being about 2-3 hours!

In my experience, nurseries let them sleep for as long as they want- are they waking her up after an hour?

Tynm · 08/10/2024 08:47

I think she may be getting woken up by other children

@Tynm "I think she may be getting woken up by other children"

You need to talk to the nursery about that!

Tynm · 08/10/2024 09:49

Yes just been talking to MIL about it. I think they all just sleep in the same room as other children playing. It's no wonder she can't sleep properly

You're lucky your 16 month old sleeps for an hour. Mine is slightly younger and sleeps 1-2 hours a day at home and then sleeps through at night. Lucky to get an hour at Nursery but they're just excited.

They never sleep as well at nursery as at home - it's going to be bright and noise, other children crying.

I think this can be a difficulty of childcare unless you have a nanny. Tricky though and you can look at other options if there’s a nursery with a separate sleeping room?

Nursery is never going to be that quiet though. At my DD's nursery they have a separate room for sleeping, but it's always going to be noisier than at home just from other children taking longer to settle, then others waking up first, getting up, going back to the main room and playing etc.

Does she sleep in silence at home?

If the nursery doesn't have space for a separate room, I'm not sure what they could do.

It’s more likely she’s getting woken up by other children waking up themselves or crying in the sleep area, no intentionally

Nearlyamumoftwo · 08/10/2024 20:03

They won't be waking her intentionally.

Whats likely is she's aware there's lots of fun going on and she's getting a bit of FOMO. Other children will wake up, she'll stir, and decide being awake is more fun. When did she start? If recently, it's not uncommon for them to not sleep long.

re other children waking her, I doubt it's another child walking up to her and patting her and waking her , it's more likely she's being disturbed by other children when they wake. They will all sleep in the same area - I'm not sure other nurseries will do things too differently - they can't all have their own room!

Have you spoken to nursery about it? Obviously they can't change the fundamentals of what napping at nursery is, but sometimes small tweaks can make a difference. DD2 is an incredibly light sleeper, and her mat was in the absolute furthest, quietest corner. Or if they have a separate sleep room for the younger babies, perhaps your DD could also use it.
