Snacks at Nursery

My DS is 19 months, he attends nursery 8-5pm ,4 days a week. He has been attending the nursery for 6 months.

He has breakfast, lunch and tea there. Snacks are offered at 10am and 2pm.

Which are a selection of tinned and some fresh fruit and very rarely crackers and spread, veg sticks & dip and crumpets.

Now my concern is that it's mainly only ever fruit as a snack that i see logged in the nursery app on what my DS has been offered.

He only will eat bananas, which results in him not eating a snack most of the time. I know that at home he would be agitated and hungry if he had no snacks in between lunch and dinner.

Do i discuss this with the nursery? I feel like the snacks are not a variety, even though they state they offer more than just fruit, which results in him missing out most days on a snack.

Id like to get others feedback on this and please no nasty comments. I'm just trying to do the best for my son 😊

Are you sure it's just fruit they're offering, and they're not just telling you fruit because that's what he chose to eat? When DS was in nursery, they offered a few options each day and DS always ate the fruit, so that's what they wrote on the sheet. Key worker often mentioned in person other snacks he'd looked at/licked parts of and rejected 😂

They dont want agitated kids so I'm sure they will make sure they get what he needs. Have a chat with them about it to put your mind at ease. Nursery is such a different setting than at home so just because he has things one way at home doesn't mean its the only thing that will work for him at nursery.

snacks are unhealthy, and a fairly recent invention. Your dc will be fine without. If he’s starving he might try something new.

Snacks are good as it means you're eating little and often rather than three large meals. Providing you eat less at meals it can be a healthy way to eat

They’re likely offering more variety and just logging what your son has eaten. Have a chat with them and see what else is offered. They will be limited somewhat to what they can offer as they’re catering for a group rather than an individual child like you would at home.

He doesn't need lots of snacks, he'll be fine!

He's having breakfast, lunch and tea and presumably another meal at home. He doesn't need a snack - if he was hungry he'd eat the fruit.

I'm a childminder and only do lunch and an afternoon tea/snack. No child has died of hunger yet.

I think it’s fine to speak to them. Ask why they are only offering fruit. Could you ask them if they can ensure he is always offered a banana for one of the snacks which you can provide if needs be??
