Puddlesuit - fleece or not?

Hello,

just preparing for autumn/winter and struggling to decide! Here’s the situation:

Starting nursery in January so will need a puddlesuit.

Baby wearing - whatever we get I want to be able to use all the time. We don’t use a pram. So snowsuit is a definite no go due to overheating and jacket/dungarees is cumbersome.

So definitely puddlesuit. Fleece or non fleece? Thinking non fleece to save buying two and have it last longer. But also don’t want her getting cold.

Will size up and get 18-24 and just roll sleeves/legs up.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated!!

I'm not entirely sure what you want it for? Puddle suits are usually waterproof for being outside in the wet. Do you have a cover for your sling? Or use an umbrella?
Puddle suits are generally quite plasticy so your child will get warm if attached to you wearing one. They aren't the most comfortable things to wear for kids in slings.

Are you sure you won't use some kind of pram/scooter/trike as she gets older? Regularly baby wearing an older child is physically hard.

How old is baby?

My toddler had a puddle suit for nursery which was a two piece dungarees and jacket (not fleece) that he wore outside at nursery. His nursery was basically forest school before that was a thing, but they played out in all weather.

I don’t think baby wearing would have been practical by the time he was toddling though.

@MultiplaLight she’ll be 1 next month and we use an Ergobaby in backpack mode so I currently don’t feel her at all! Been carrying her daily since she was born so she’s like my little weighted vest keeping me fit 😂 last winter we just wrapped a scarf around her and used an umbrella.

We need it for nursery in January, and also for her to wear when we’re at the park or practicing walking in the field or generally just being outdoors when we take a break on hikes etc. Her clothes are currently getting ruined and we’re only just entering autumn weather!

That’s really good to know about being uncomfortable for them while carrying. Maybe it’s a non fleece one I can pack away and just pop on as needed!

@PiggieWig yeah her’s is a forest school so a lot of time outdoors, so that’s great to know yours weren’t fleece! Did they wear a jacket underneath or just normal clothes? She’s currently trying to walk and in the up down up down phase, it’s a workout for sure 😂

There's a big difference between a just 1yo and 2yo when it comes to baby wearing!

Don't buy too big and roll up, you're better off buying second hand the right size. The torso will be the wrong size too.

We much preferred separate trousers and a coat, easier to get on and off, and more options.

These are the ones my toddler had. We ordered ours through nursery - I think they bought a job lot at a discount, but they were ideal. Some days he just wore the jacket, other days the full set up, depending on weather and activity.

@PiggieWig I still wear my toddler at occasionally at 3. He normally walks now but it's no problem wearing a toddler.

I think no fleece, we just layer. I would avoid rolling up as it can be a bit tricky to move in until they're more stable.

Update in case anyone else is in a similar situation - we went with a muddy puddles puddlesuit! No fleece but it has a cotton lining. The shell material is completely waterproof but not plastic and super breathable, feels like cotton. So it’s comfortable for both of us when she’s in it.

During the cold snap and snow this last week, we layered up with a fleece and normal clothes underneath. It worked a treat.

Paired the puddlesuit with a pair of Juicy Bumbles leather slip on shoes but just got a pair of water resistant booties from H&M to now see us into winter.

Good waterproofs are essential at nursery. A lot of shop bought puddlesuits aren't waterproof just 'showerproof' so if you have a non mobile/ newly mobile child, they still end up soaking wet and require changing.

Muddle puddle suits are great. Dungarees are more versatile and last longer as are more adjustable. I highly recommend Lidl and Aldi waterproofs as well. The dungarees are really good value and totally waterproof. Perfect if you want to buy a pair to leave at nursery.

@EbbandTheWanderingHearts Will definitely keep eyes peeled for them as spares!! In love with our muddy puddles, absolutely the best purchase we’ve made after our carrier! And their customer service was excellent when a strap was missing!
