I’ve been getting increasingly concerned with my son’s nursery for various reasons and today I’ve got another thing added to the list… the other day they posted a picture of my son using scissors, fine. I’ve now noticed the top he was wearing on that day has got a huge hole cut in the chest area of it. They had bagged it up as dirty washing and not mentioned it so I had no idea until I’ve just pulled it out of the dryer.

Obviously, I don’t care about the top but I’m more concerned about the level of supervision with the scissors. It’s not like cutting fabric with children’s scissors is a quick and easy task and it’s a pretty thick/quality t-shirt as well. My son is only just over 25 months so his ability to use scissors isn’t great so I do wonder how he was even able to do this, especially at an angle towards his body.

I know they won’t actually have an answer if I complain about this, especially if they didn’t actually see it so am I going to come across as the crazy parent if I mention this?

I'm surprised that a 2 year old with nursery scissors could cut a hole in his top-are you sure it didn't get caught in the washing machine or something?

I was surprised too… it’s 100% a cut - a clean V shape as if the fabric has been pinched together and cut.

Maybe it was, accidentally, cut by another child? Or even a teacher when helping him?

Definitely a possibility… just would have expected them to mention it! If it was another child I question how well they are being supervised even more.

I work with 3 year olds and we let them use the kids safety scissors - which is what your dc will no doubt have been using. So I wouldn’t worry about them using scissors.

Nursery clothes should ideally be ones you don’t mind getting ruined.

ZipZapZoom · 03/05/2024 11:13

I would definitely ask how the T-shirt ended up with a clearly cut hole in it. Your child is only just 2 there is no way he would be able to cut his own t-shirt or another child had enough time to cut it and no one noticed unless the supervision was basically none existent.

Take it in and physically show it them if it's definitely been cut. I'm not even sure as an adult I'd be able to use safety scissors to cut a T-shirt to that extent.

Hilarious how the first responses are that you could not possibly be correct in thinking that your son might have cut his own tshirt given the evidence of a cut tshirt, a picture of your son holding a pair of scissors and the absence of another explanation.
Ask!!

I can see the scissors he’s using in the photo and have no issue with that, more concerned about the lack of guidance of how to use them appropriately? Surely they should be told not to cut their clothes and then supervised to make sure they don’t. The clothes and whether they got ruined or not isn’t the question I have.

I’m sure they were supervising the kids, but the staffing isn’t one to one.

SomeBollocks · 03/05/2024 12:03

There's no harm in raising it. I wouldn't go in all guns blazing, just ask, and state your concerns that if he could can his top then he could also have cut himself. Make it very clear that you're not bothered about the clothes being damaged as otherwise they might jump on that as the issue instead.

No one thinks the supervision is 1-1 however, if a two year old or one of his peers was able to cut a thick T-shirt with safety kids scissors I'd wonder if they were being watched by anyone. It would take a heck of a long time and some serious determination to cut a T-shirt with kids safety scissors.

Exactly, it's just so difficult to do. I can't imagine I would be able to cut through fabric with those child scissors, they barely cut paper. Cut hair etc, can definitely see how that would happen (been there Grin) but a tshirt is weird.

Oh I've been there with the hair too 😅. As I said earlier I don't even think I as an adult would be able to cut a T-shirt with the scissors so I'm not sure why anyone would discourage the OP from asking about supervision. It doesn't sound like they were supervised by anyone for a quite significant amount of time and I don't think it's unreasonable to query that.

Agreed. I’m not naive to staffing situations, my husband and I are both teachers. But I do think an are where scissors are being used should be closely supervised as if they can cut a tshirt, they could cut skin.
