Will my child get 15 hours when he turns 3

My little boy goes to Nursery. At the moment he is 2 but will turn 3 in June.

Will he be able to get 15 free hours of nursery funding when he turns 3?

My husband works full time but I don't work and I am currently in early stages of pregnancy. I’m 7 weeks so very very early. I only received universal credit and no other benefits. I was in work when pregnant with my little boy so didn’t receive any benefits then.

I’m so confused if he will be eligible come September for the 15 hours or is it strictly just for working parents. I’m seeing conflicting things online about it.
one says all children age 3 will receive 15 hours
with working parents of children ages 3 will receive 30 hours.
Somewhere else says it’s just working parents.
so what it is. It’s very confusing. HELP!

Yes all three year olds get universal funding of 15 hours. If both parents work or mum is on maternity leave pending a return to work, then you'll be eligible for 30 hours. Start calling settings asap as demand is high

So will my son receive 15 hours in September, even though I don’t work and only claim universal credit.

He’s not eligible for it at the moment. I spoke to his nursery and said he isn’t eligible for funding at the moment. Have to wait until September when he is 3 to get the 15 hours. Just checking if this is correct or am I not going to get any help at all

Yes. 15 hours term time only for his preschool year. You will apply for primary school at the beginning of January so perhaps look to school nursery classes at the school he's likely to go to.

I thought both parents had to be working?

Edit - nope I'm wrong, see here

The gov website isn't initially very clear as it's all set up on a section called "free childcare if you're working"!

You have to apply to check eligibility for 30 hours for expanded childcare- this is the one you need to be in work for.

The universal 15 hours for 3/4 year olds has not changed: all children are eligible for this regardless of parents work status. You do not apply for a code for this, hence why it's not on the link above from PP.

All three year olds get 15 hours free the term after they are three. This is considered to be the 'educational' part of nursery. You can apply for an additional 15 hours ( making it 30 hours) but this is only for parents who are both working. You need to put your child's name down now for a September start.
