Nursery injured my child

I currently work at a nursery where my 13 month old attends. We’re not In the same room for obvious reasons. I started there in January and I’ve absolutely loved the job but I’ve also faced many issues which have made me unhappy.

My baby had a head injury requiring cold compress and I wasn’t informed until a month later. I was beyond shocked and disgusted because I actually work there. At this point I started looking for another job. As a single mum working on getting a level 3 diploma I can’t just quit.
last week my baby suffered a broken toe whilst In their care. The nursery say that the practitioner was picking him up and my son’s clothes got caught in the fire extinguisher which made it hit and break my baby’s toe. I was absolutely broken when I picked up my screaming baby. Accidents happen, I understand that, but this is a fracture.

I was offered another job in a different nursery which I accepted and handed in my notice. I need a reference for my new employer. I got through half of my notice when another incident occurred.
The other day another small child almost chocked on a seal of a baby wipe pack because it was on the floor. He had to receive first aid and could have been fatal. I actually heard an apprentice working there laugh of the incident. I’m outraged even though that wasn’t my child.
I promptly walked out with 3 days left to work on my notice because I don’t feel it’s a safe environment.

I just feel that leaving isn’t enough, I feel so bitter and angry that my son has suffered so much in the care of people I trusted and worked with. I guess this is a rant more than anything, but what would you do if that were your child?

Report to Ofsted

People are usually too quick to jump to Ofsted, but in this case, absolutely. Ofsted will care about safety.

In all honesty, I'd be asking to view cctv for the toe incident too.

If your baby had a confirmed fracture the manager should have officially reported it too.

Definitely speak to ofsted if you feel that the managing team aren’t taking this seriously and dealing with the room.

You work in Early years, you should know what to do. Ofsted and Lado immediately.

Ofsted are useless. They will give the nursery 2 weeks to produce evidence of safety checks. You can write in setting out the situation which technically is made public but it will not be put on the ofsted website and will only be shared if people request to see all correspondence about the setting.

You can report to your local council's safeguarding team which will review the situation.

Frankly the most effective way to get the nursery to address issues is via the media but obviously when you haven't secured your next job is likely to have negative implications for your future career in the industry.

I'm sceptical that this is true, because surely anyone working in childcare knows what to do when they think children are being mistreated or a setting/employee is being dangerously neglectful? 🤨

If your baby has a fractured toe, then the hospital staff will already have reported the nursery to social services as it would be seen as a non accidental injury.
I can’t imagine how they did break their toe though. The extinguisher would have had to fall on baby’s foot with considerable force which would result in more than a broken toe!

Report to Ofsted now

I'm also not convinced you are being told the truth.

The broken bone will be reported to Ofsted. They decide what actions and checks to make. You may wish to ask for a report on the accident and whether they have followed the correct procedure or not as a parent.

If you feel the environment or other is unsafe you should follow the complaints policy. If you feel the management is breaking the law or not following procedure or there is something else wrong you may wish to refer to your whistleblowing policy.

Report to ofsted.
contact your local safeguarding children’s team with your concerns (it’ll be part of your NHS sector)
You could (if you really wanted to) report to local paper.

It should be reported to ofsted but they may not have. Definitely flag it up to ofsted in case they haven’t, as that is a clear breach of the statutory requirements and will be easier for Ofsted to confirm and take action against.

Sounds awful. But you also would knlw what to do I'd have thought?

If that was my boy he would be out of there fast. Request CCTV footage of the fractured toe, something fishy there imo.

Gosh! That’s really extreme. I haven’t known any babies getting a broken bone at nursery (very occasionally an energetic preschooler). I would report to ofsted. The nursery response should have been horror that this happened and reviewing all their safety. If they weren’t perfuming apologising to you and explaining how they would stop anything like this happening again that would make me very concerned too.

Did you not see the head injury - no bump or bruise or red mark

Yes report to ofted but also as someone else said report to council

If someone is injured in a business the council are meant to be told

Another child needing cpr

You work in a nursery. You must know about safe guarding
